Thank you for the warning, but I think I'll wait for more details from you before writing off the whole bank. You know, just in case it wasn't their fault.

No bank or build society is perfect, most are quite proficient and even the worst have some good staff working for them.

Halifax are one of the better ones in my own experience and I've been in quite a few high street banks over the years; actually I can't think of one I've not been in

I quite like Halifax actually. I find their online banking pretty good and have never had a problem when using their branches.

Doubt it - shot down in flames on your first post? Hardly tea and sympathy.

Will probably come back under a different name.
You've never seen me, but I've been here all along - watching and learning...

My local Halifax branch is excellent. I opened two accounts for both myself and my wife for the Regular Saver and one of its partner accounts as well as their fixed rate cash ISA for my wife which included transfers from other ISA providers and the whole process was completely painless.

Same for my Barclays cash ISA.

    Maybe I'm just lucky.
  • Although obviously an entire bank shouldn't be dissed for one experience, I do have some sympathy with the OP. I had a nightmare opening the new 10% regular saver. In hindsight maybe it would have been smoother had I done it in branch. Took me about 7 phone calls to get sorted out, and while their call centre staff were polite and helpful, "actions" didn't always follow. Consequently I was in real danger of missing the cut off date for first payment (in the same month as opened), and had to insist they took the payment from my websaver (containing the proceeds of my closed down 'old' 7% reg saver) rather than an external account - which to the persons credit she spent time checking that this abnormal route was both possible and necessary and we eventually got sorted.

I've also found that opening up a fixed term ISA for purposes of prior year transfer only hasn't been quite as smooth as I would have liked.

Call centre staff have however showed significant patience and diplomacy in the face of my occassionally too obvious frustrations

i found halifax helpful when swapping from 7 to 10% accounts however a word of warning, - they still took the £250 as well as the £500 on the first transfer, then it was 'floating' in there system until i pointed out their mistake.

This i guess is one mistake out of many accounts but worth watching out for.
