ebuyer have 1tb sata drives for £85.
I suspect an older mac wouldn't take SATA drives and prefer IDE in which case, around £100 will get you 750gb

serial "SoGA deniers" just like Comet and Currys and all staff including managers are trained to repeat the mantra of "it's not under warranty so we can't help you".
I realise this discussion is about getting a hard drive fixed etc, but I'd just like to point out that as an ex employee of John Lewis A+TV department, the above is most definitely not true.
I wish you all the best with fixing your computer.

When I had a similar issue with a breakdown of an expensive computer from JL, just out of warranty, I had lengthy discussions with the store manager about it.
He was a decent chap and I felt sorry for him as he was in an awkward position. He admitted to me that he was under instruction to tell customers that warranties were their only possible form of recourse, and that JL would not consider any free repair/replacement outside of warranty.
When I kept pushing the point about the SoGA, he put his hands in the air and said I was "absolutely right" and he "felt bad" for having to toe the company line.
His actual words to me were "I'd recommend that you issue a court claim against us and then head office will pay up immediately".
He even told me how much it would cost to issue the claim and various bits of helpful advice about how to word it!
(And his prediction was spot on - they did pay up when I took his advice).
I've read on MSE and Consumer Action Group about this exact scenario happening to so many other John Lewis customers, that I truly believe their stonewall denial of the SoGA is enshrined in company policy/training.0 -
Thanks for all the helpful tips. I've emailed John Lewis and unfortunately their response was as follows;
"I have clarified your situation with our Customer Service Team and I am afraid that in this instance we are unable to assist any further. I fully understand your frustration due to the short length of time that passed after your guarantee period expiring and I know that this is not the answer that you would have liked to have received.
We are comfortable with where we sit with regards to the Sale of Goods Act, due to the fact that we have no records of the fault occurring from new."
I guess I'll have to follow it up with an actual court claim.

I don't think the durability part of the SOGA is exempt from the burden of proof of the fault, which is what it sounds like they're claiming here. i.e. you'd have to get an independent report showing the fault was present from the start, given it only appeared 2 years in, and the reverse burden of proof at the 6 month part.
I may be getting mixed up though, it's been a while since I looked at all this.0 -
Can`t you put the old laptop in the new laptop box with the new receipt and return that for a refund?

i returned 8 boxes of shoes to next and not one was opened to check the right shoes were in there.gaming_guy wrote: »that may not work as JL may check the serial numbers of the laptop

The SOGA for durability may not work
The OP has said they had a high capacity drive through necessity, this would suggest it saw a high level of usage therefore 2 years 2 months may be a reasonable time frame for the hard drive to last before needing a repair
I reckon JL can be quite happy they would be winners here0
