If you've got a problem and the item is out of warranty, I'd advise shopping around with engineers to see if one can do it cheaper, or take it up with apple directly.

As previously stated, warranty/guarantee is irrelevant and luckily the LAW protects us from this attitude.

It's going to be fairly easy to prove that the hd wasn't damaged through impact, infact to solve this issue if the op wants to pm me and send the hd to me with return postage I'll inspect and give a written report - I bet quite a bit of money that a hd in a desktop machine hasn't had impact damage.

Is it worth John Lewis's reputation, time and money to take this to court?
