im shocked at how much uniform everyone has.

my boys have always only had one pair of school trousers and one sweatshirt. probably two or three polo tops.

my dd has tons of uniform but a lot of that is passed on from friends daughters. she has two sweatshirts but they have done the last year and are still fine for this year.

i have actually bought 4 polo tops for return to school and that is it.

i have five children so definitely wash and iron every day so i have never found the need for tons of uniform. always have clean everyday.

as they are now getting older they are much less messy and im also much poorer so less is being bought anyway.

all their coats are fine from last year. they will all have new shoes but probably not until october half term.

My DS (6) has five of everything, exept PE Kit & Shoes, its easier for me this way, i dont really have time to be doing a school wash during the week.
Its all washed on Friday night, put out to dry around the flat, then put away Saturday morning. Plus, he is forever coming home covered in something, i did think of sending clothes for him to change into after school at the childminders, but decided it would just double my washing load!

I couldn't manage on as little. Frequently ds comes home with his trousers ripped from playing football:rolleyes: , with 1 pair I would then be shopping that night- with both kids if dh was away-, for another pair in the right size & colour, and I agree with what Carmina has said about lack of choice later on in the school year.

Janepig - I put my dd in pinafores instead of skirts due to problems with fitting.

This year, dd has 5 pinafores that still fit her, so I'm not buying new, they should last till she wears summer dresses instead. I've got 5 polo shirts cos hers are white:eek: and 3 cardis. I'm not getting the school sweatshirt as they have changed the design (without telling parents they were going to!) and its made all the sweatshirts I had stacked up from ds going to that school no use:mad:

DS has 4 polo shirts cos his are navy (and a pig to find!), 4 school jumpers and 3 new trousers as he still has 2 old pairs left.
  • when our school changed the uniform they said kids were still allowed to wear the old stuff if it was second hand - not sure how they would tell really, because it was summer dresses and some may not have been worn often the previous year and would look like new. it was summer dresses and cardigans they were getting stricter on, saying you can't wear red any longer.

the letter home was worded in such a way as to make the kids and adults feel bad about wearing old clothes though, sort of 'poor kids can wear cast-offs but can the rest of you make sure you buy the correct colour please'

  • Spendless has anyone commented on you sending your daughter back to school without new uniform? I've had relatives who are horrified that I am not buying new for 'back to school'.

My mum seems to think that my child will be bullied if his shirt isn't creased from the packet on the first day back  I wouldn't give it to him from the packet anyhow, his clothes get washed before he wears them  I have new trousers in the cupboard but he hasn't grown yet  He lost both his jumpers so I have bought 2 new, but the ties aren't very old because he lost 5 last year. He hardly wore his short sleeved shirts, so they are fine for september. Obviously i've got rid of any with stains or rips.

He also says he likes his bags and pencil cases etc. so he wants to keep using them. I don't see the point in buying new. I have bought pens, pencils etc. and replaced the lost maths equipment.

Nope cos the people who I know WOULD criticise, I don't bother telling. :p

At nursery dd nursery had a pinafore that was originally worn by DH's cousin,21 years earlier, it then went to her younger sister, then another cousin, before going out to Canada to another cousin. It missed neice out as she was too tall for it to fit and the original owners daughter as it was still in Canada, when it came back Miss Spendless wore it, and I've now passed it on to the 2nd wearers daughter who is the youngest girl in family -so far! I had a mum admire it and ask where I'd got it, wheras telling another set of relatives who are very much 'the price of everything the value of nothing' asked why on earth DH's family would keep something like that.

2 of dd's pinafores you can not tell that they aren't brand new , so she'll have one of those on for 1st day wear;) and her polo shirts and cardis are. The school probably will say you can use old sweatshirts up, but dd won't query if she has a cardi instead but she will notice if her sweatshirt hasn't got the same emblom as her friends and ask for the same.

Spendless has anyone commented on you sending your daughter back to school without new uniform? .

My total "back to school" outlay for this term has been 2 new shirts for dd as the other ones (which had lasted 2 school years) were a bit scabby round the collars, and 1 pair of trousers for ds! (shoes too, but their last ones were outgrown)

If they come home and their cardigan or jumper has marks on, I just sponge them and they come up fine, I only wash them at the weekend.
Same with skirt or trousers-I either sponge, or a quick wash in the sink, hang up and they're ready for the morning

They do both get a clean shirt every day!

DD (6) has five polos, three pairs of trousers (although I'm considering having five this year) and one cardi (will be two though, as I'll get a new one when they go back).

I can't be doing with washing and drying clothes during the week.

She's a dirt magnet and so rarely wears the same item twice, except for her cardi, and that's because the school is so warm she hardly wears it during the day!
