If his widow has a Grant of Probate, that might be acceptable documentationLeblur said:I have been trying to find any deferred pensions for my brother-in-law, who sadly passed away just before Christmas.
I am quite sure that he had a pension with Radio Rentals/Thorn EMI, but when I email Pension Insurance Corporation (who bought out the pension fund in 2008) they just respond with a box standard, cut-and-paste response referring to my pension details and not regarding my brother-in-laws.
I have registered an account with Gretel, as this has been recommended by MSE, to see if I can get any further with this pension search. Unfortunately, the Gretel website states I must have legal documentation (e.g. Power of Attorney) before I can search for someone else.
Neither myself nor his widow have such documentation, so we are unable to use Gretel, as has been recommended by MSE.
MSE has asked for feedback on Gretel, so I'm reporting this stumbling block here.
Any suggestions?
I am sure I have the correct company for my brother-in-law's pension. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1 -
No probate required in this instance.lincroft1710 said:

So did you BIL die intestate? If so then perhaps a copy of the death certificate and marriage certificate may allow the widow to ask for info.Leblur said:

Also, Power of Attorney ceases to be a legally usable document when the 'donor' passes away. Therefore, Gretel does not appear to be a usable tool for finding lost assets of a deceased loved one, unless probate is applicable.Leblur said:

Yes. My brother-in-law didn't have a will. Everything, which is below the probate level, goes to his widow.lincroft1710 said:
