What is the official name of those green bags please and where can i buy them
They're called 'Stay fresh longer' bags and are sold by Lakeland. However, I think I've read somewhere on here that you can sometimes find something similar at the pound shop.

Hi, Yes I'm sure you can get the bags in £Land, although personally I just freeze them. Just seems more expense to me to buy special bags, even if they are only £1

Yes, they are in pound shops, home bargains, Yorkshire Store,

Brilliant things, I bought too many sprouts at Christmas and put the extra ones (uncooked) into one of these, I took them out on New Years day and they were as fresh as the day I put them in. Same with any veg. Worth their weight in gold.

£1 for about 10 bags which are also washable. More than pay for themselves.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I store my Fruit and veg in a zipped canvas bag that I got shopping.
The fruit and veg are way out of the flies which I am trying to get rid of.
My question is I notice the smell of Ethelyne Gas whenever I open the zip, and I am wondering is there any OS way?? to get rid of it so my stores stay fresher for longer?/
Thanks in advance for your help.:money:

Not really an OS way but i bought some of these at christmas http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fruit-Veg-Savers-3-Discs/dp/B002SQPW3Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336375789&sr=8-1
1 lasts 3 months, i decided that if they help my fruit last longer then they would be worth it. i have to say i think they have made a difference, but i've not had a fruit bowl, one with, one not.
Opinion on everything, knowledge of nothing.
  • Thanks @kittycat204 I have just ordered them.
I have been going out of my mind in trying to find Ethylene absorbing things without success.

Fruit gives off ethylene when it ripens and keeping it in closed paper bag is the recommended way of ripening unripe fruit. ie. bung it in a closed bag with a banana.

I keep my veg in the bottom of the fridge and the fruit on the sideboard (bananas, apples pears) soft fruits also in the fridge.

Maybe the flies are being attracted to the fruit in the bag if the smell is very strong? I think I'd be tempted to ditch the bag and see what happens?

  • My bags are zipped shopping bags that I brought especially for the purpose as they come from Waitrose.
The flies are/were a real problem because they were exposed to the Riverford Boxes out in my Living Room.(My flat is very small meaning storage is a problem).
Since I've been keeping the above in the bags my fly problem has diminished. Now there is only one little barstard stalking me.
Ideally I would let out all the Etheleyne Gas once a day? twice a day? without it being an open invitation to any lurking flies in the neighbourhood. But I am afraid.

  • I went to Waitrose deliberately to get the bags. I will post a photo, in order to store Veg.

  • I am trying to deal with fly problem. I have had a fly problem by learning how to regularly empty rubbish and not let it hang around, one of my vices.
I am really a Case for Flyladies on MSE. (Or FlyMen as the case may be!).
