storing fruit and veg

  • Carrots last longer if stored in a plastic box lined with kitchen paper placed in the salad box. Change the paper every couple of days and wipe the inside of box if condensation on box. Spuds do not seem to keep well in dark kitchen cupboard- sprouting with in a week. I used to buy a big sack of spuds, with or without mud, from a farm shop or the greengrocers and they used to last weeks, one or two spuds went messy but we just regularly went through the sack checking. What do the farmers /supermarkets do to our spuds or are they actually a lot older than we think!!!!!!

Any suggestions on keeping spuds most welcome.

i keep all my veg in the fridge, except my sack of spud which normally i keep under the stairs but at the mo at in the kitchen on a tile floor, so they keep cool.
when i mean plan i ill plan a meal with mushrooms in say the firs 1 or 2 days of shopping. or i will not buy them but pop to local shop who sell them cheaply and i make sure i only buy these. i never have a prob with veg lasting now i keep it all in fridge. we recenlty bought a new fridge. one of the tall upright ones as i found my fridge part of fridge freezer wasn't enough space to allow me to keep a weeks worth of fruit and veg in. and it has been a god send. best investment ever.

with fruit, i buy more than i need for a week because it will get eaten. the children have 2 or 3 bits of fruit a day in lunch boxes ( sometimes more) plus i generally make a fruit platter for them to have after their toast or cereal for breakifast. i load the fruit bowl up and keep extra in fridge. i'm craving fresh fruit at the mo , and hubby loves fruit any time of the day. i just don't seem to be able to buy enough. can't wait till my home grown strawberries are ready , we eat so many, lol.

I have mushrooms in the fridge I bought last Thursday - but I take them out of the plastic punnets and put them in a paper bag straight away. my potatoes go in the cupboard by the air brick so they keep cool along with other root veg, and the carrots are tipped out of their plastic bag into a mesh basket and put in same cupboard, salad stuff is normally unwrapped except for the lettuce which actually keeps better in its wrapper. water cress is kept in a large jug of water on the windowsill (not that it stays there long - I love the stuff). tomatoes too live on the windowsill - my windowsill looks like a market barrow when I have done the shop! my cut flowers have to fight for space along with the permanent pot plant residents (violet and orchid)! my OH says it looks a mess but I think it looks nice with all the lovely colours!

I keep all mine in the garage and it seems to last well. Mind you I do have a door in my kitchen which leads directly into the garage so it is very convenient:D

  • I only shop once a week and use all fresh veg except for peas and broad beans.
I have had a problem with some fresh goods the last few weeks from Tesco and (within their sell by date) have taken back tomatoes (which were covered in a white mould within 3 days) and green beans which were black within their sell by date. Just threw some cucumber which was going off very quickly as I couldn't get to town to return it and couldn't stand the gooey mess!

A tip if you use fresh herbs that came from a chef at a food festival demo - take them out of the plastic bags and wrap in damp kitchen roll. Re-dampen the tissue every couple of days and I have had parsley and coriander keep for up to four weeks!
    Be nice to each other
