Bad Internet Connection-call Out For The It Gods!!

Options
Hi all the clever IT gods out there!!

Moved house in March, and apparently the connection for the phone and the internet is really poor. We tried Talk Talk for a week and we were lucky to gave 5mins connection before it went offline. Luckily Talk Talk do a trial period so we went charged for this. We have now only gota BT line for calls and I am a bit sceptical of BT in general and really dont want to pay their expensive internet rates for a service that is going to constantly crash. Apparently the 'line' is old and will be upgraded inthe future!! Any ideas? My OH and I are total internet freaks and do nearly everything on it (ok, not everything!) so at the moment feel like a limb has been removed, also doing a lot of stuff at work which isnt ideal as I have to shut down have way through due to lurking bosses.

Would be grateful for any advice at all.

Many thanks in advance,

Adele

Have you checked what Speed you should be able to get?

How far away from the exchange are you ?

If in a rural area then yes BB is poor

Check here then come back and let us know what you should be able to get

Using a BT line does not restrict you to using BT as your ISP! Check what is available to you, and a predicted speed here. There are many other providers!

    Hi Adele,

just wondered, you said you were with Talk Talk and then went back to BT, how did you do this as Bt are trying to charge me a reconnection fee? As we want to leave talk talk.

Not true, I live in a village, I get far better speeds than my colleague who lives in the middle of a big town, using the same ISP.

In fact my speed is twice the speed of his.

Correct was meant if in rural areas BB CAN be poor as distance from exchange can be large
  • Hi guys,

Sorry for not getting back quicker, like i said I am at work and sometimes i have to look busy! ;-)

Anyhoe, Lee634 AND espresso ;-) I clicked the link and I got this:

Congratulations, you are in a broadband enabled area.
The following services are available in your location:
    BT Wholesale ADSL
    BT Wholesale ADSL Max
    AOL LLU
    TalkTalk (CPW) LLU

Please select the options on the left for more information about broadband availability at your location.

This seems to be the main problem, as everyone says we can get the BB from them but when we do the connection is so bad we are better off not having it eg, mass swearing and ranting when it closes in the middle of paying a bill. Our mate works in O2 and he did some sort of check and said that the line is poor and it is earmarked for upgrade, but that could be years! I was thinking of getting a wireless connector, like the ones for the laptops as we have one of them too, and hope that the signal is strong in our area, would that work?

Live in Glasgow so not country, unfortunately, and funnily enough there is actually a telephone exchange round the corner from our house, go figure!!!

  • Hi nezzysaver,
BT tried to charge me a cancellation fee even though it was for less than a week and we were going back to them. The charge was £164.00!! No chance, I tried to phone them up but they seem to be numptys and said I would have to pay regardless. I managed to get the CEO's email address and e'd him direct, I got a email from him as a cc directing his team to deal with it, within an hour I had someone fromthe chief execs office on the phone who cancelled it, and sorted out all the other mess the normal call centre created, also got a £30 credit, well worth doing!!

    hmm very strange,

As your now with BT, what i would suggest is you get BB with them! wait before shouting.

Go for their basic option1 for now.

See how the connection is, if it is then bad make a complaint and get them to fix it, They say you should get ADSL max therefore there shouldn't be a problem with the line as this has been tested and whats on their database.

Most telephone lines were originally put in by BT and IMHO they are better at getting thing fixed than any of the other ISP's

well thats just my thoughts anyway.
