If you need to shout at somebody

    To make a fuss!

The op could have made something up and they'd be none the wiser but no, the op wanted a fuss instead.

In fairness the op was not returning an item for a refund, the op had been overcharged and brought this to the attention of the checkout person, why should they have to provide personal date to get money back that should not have been taken in the first place. Yes it would have been easier to make something up but why should they have to resort to lies? I would usually give my name/address if I wanted a refund but would prefer not to give out my details because I have been overcharged...dont want the constant mailshots that these types of companies seem to like sending

Whats having not left the shop got to do with it? Do you mean you'd walk out then shout your address back through the door.

Bottom line is that it is for audit and security purposes. What if Dave Smith the Curry's sales assistant made a habit of refunding to the Smith family - who all live at the same address.

In fairness, the guy was only doing his job. I don't think OP will be bombarded with junk mail.
