Internet Card Readers - are they unique to each Bank?

I think it also has something to do with the type of Chip in your card.
I recall Barclays telling me I may need a new card when my reader arrived as my chip might need upgraded, and my friend had her RBS debit card replaced at the same time as she got the reader.0 -

yes indeed, both my barclays and nationwide cards were changed just before the readers were sent out0 -
Yup - the chips on the cards are actually little microprocessors. They need a special application on them to be able to talk to the card readers, which all seem to be produced by a company called XIRING and based on standards/specifications developed by VISA and MasterCard. So I'd expect them to all be interoperable - they have been in my experience.0

I will try it again when I get home from work.0

UPDATE: I have now tried my Barclays Connect debit card in my Nationwide card reader.
Whilst it will read the card, and generate a passcode, that passcode is not the same as the one generated by the Barclays card reader and hence it won't log you into the Barclays site.
So whilst the machines are "compatible" to an extent, that extent isn't any use at all!
Back to plan A, of getting a second card reader "for my wife" so that I can leave it permanently at work.0 -
Is that the "identify" function? I believe "respond" and "sign" should work across banks.0

That is strange, you are not going to get exactly the same number when you use your card in one then the other (you know that dont know? don't mean to be rude but just in case). Is Barclays refusing to log you in when you use identify, you pin and the code it generate on the Nationwide reader?0 -
In answer to both, yes, it's the identify function.
And yes, Barclays is refusing to accept the code generated from the Nationwide reader, but accepts the code from the Barclays reader.
I don't expect to get two identical numbers. But I would expect (based on what others have asserted) to get two numbers which will both work. And unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case for me.0 -
I think the output of each card reader is unique - it's how the technology works. Of course it will read the card and generate a number - thats common to all of them - but what it produces isn't interopable.
If you're geeky like me, read about the technology here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-time_password0 -
