Internet Card Readers - are they unique to each Bank?

In our family, we have several different bank accounts which we use with internet banking facilities. Consequently, we are now beginning to receive quite a number of the new anti-fraud card readers.

To save having to carry them all with us, for example, when we go on holiday, can anyone tell me if they will work with other bank accounts - both with the same bank and others ie will my NatWest reader also work on my wife's NatWest account and also my daughter's Nationwide account.

They all look so similar...?

nat west will only allow nat west cards , but barclays allows natwest etc not sure if codes wrk thought

You should be able to use any card in any card reader.

My Natwest card reader works fine with my Barclays cards and vice verse.

I believe all the readers are the same but why not just try them out and see.

My Nationwide one turned up yesterday.
Have i missed something as i had no idea it was coming or if it was genuine at first?
Also have used the site since then and haven't been prompted to use it. We haven't got to take them shopping have we because i hate carrying things?!

My Barclays card won't work in my Nationwide reader, so I don't think they are all compatible.

strange .. just re-tried mine ... Barclays Connect debit card in a Nationwide reader .......... works fine

This suggests Barclay's card readers will work with other bank accounts, and the Nationwide website FAQs include this "You can use any Nationwide Card Reader, or one from any other UK Bank or Building Society".

However, perhaps there is a friendly MSE member who also works for a bank or APACS who might be able to give us a more definitive answer?
