We are back to the moral ethics of - Why are these clothes so cheap? Who is suffering to make the clothes so affordable? Don't be ostriches with heads in the sand! Think about the fact a 5 year old is more than likely made what your 5 year old is wearing to school. Chances are, if you are reading this, you can afford to choose! Please don't fall for peoples rubbish comments like, "well, their culture accepts this!" or "families will fall victim to further poverty if we don't buy it" ... please think twice before buying it and ask customer services HQ where it's made. I have been to third world poverty and have seen the abuse and exploitation. It makes your heart ache. Comic Relief show some excellent videos that may remind you why not to be such cheap skates. The credit pinch only means some people dont get to drive their (Usually stupid 4x4's) cars around as much, or Tabatha doesnt get an extra treat this week or the 42" tv was not best buy after all. Buy a better quality uniform for a few pounds extra and it might last longer. False economy and all that

The only problem I've got with "budget" uniforms is that the waistband on the value trousers and skirts seem to be made for billy and bessie bunter children - my DD is a normal healthy weight and they don't go near her, so I have to buy clothes with adjustable waists which are always more expensive. They're also not ideal in that the buttons on the adjustable waists rub and aren't very comfortable, although this is less of a problem in winter when tights and vests can be worn between the skin and button.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end
  • Just seen this weeks School Uniform section in the weekly Newsletter and thought I'd mention M&S have some good deals on at the mo.

Its £6.50 for School Uniform for Girls or Boys. That includes trousers/skirt, polo shirt and jumper.

Although slightly more expensive than some others who have the 3 for 2 offer, the quality is better and you can buy online! Plus your conscience can rest slightly easier than some of the others as mentioned above.

Most of the stuff is reviewed online by other people and is generally positive. Glad its so cheap, they grow up so fast!
  • Not sure how ethical they are - but I have bought them in the past and have bought some more this year:

QS do great polo shirts for £1 each - and they wash and wash and wash. brilliant. And it means if they get something permanent on them, it doesn't matter too much.

To add to the billy and bessie bunter comment, yes I have that trouble too. The best ones I have found are Primark school trousers for £2.00 each, stretch jersey type fabric. Fit a treat. This year I upgraded to M&S stretch ones (better eco wise, I believe) and they were going 3 for 2, and I had vouchers!

    Cheap isn't always the best!

I've bought the very cheap Asda uniform in the past but it didn't last as long as stuff from Sainsbury's and Tesco. The Asda clothes faded and went bobbly and out of shape much quicker.

I also have the adjustable trouser problem, as my boys are both stick thin and normal trousers are far too big in the waist for them.
Here I go again on my own....

Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts

What sizes are these trousers? my dd is 12 and is too big for the childrens range which finishes at age 13 but too small for adult sizes as she's not got an adult shape yet.
  • janepig there's a 'national schoolwear' shop in my town which sells ridiculously expensive school and brownies clothes. they do different styles of trousers, apparently. my sister buys nephew's trousers there because they fit better than the others. i HAVE to buy my son's school jumpers, ties, PE top and rugby top from there, but i try to buy his trousers elsewhere because the shop is so expensive.

  • Hi guys my (messy, demanding stubborn, normal I think:confused:) 5 yr old started a new school in Apr this year where she started wearing uniform as it was 1st time I got her 3 trousers from Big W they were £2.99 each BOGOF and a pack of 2 white shirts :eek:....i got her jumper from the school costing me £7.50 (:mad::mad:),,,,anyway all in all my DD uniform cost me about £25.00 ( exc shoes) before she started in the meantime Ive had to buy a pack of two shirts every week for about £3.75 (they were an addition to shopping list everey week like milk & bread) from asda as she was coming home from school with her shirts wrecked (complained a number of time to teachers about aprons etc I was told they do wear them :confused::confused::confused:) her trousers shrunk :rolleyes: so I had to get her 2 more skirts (DD hates wearing skirts, so arguing with me every morning that she as going to were her shrunk trousers) so. 2 weeks left to school hols so decided to stick with my guns and not get DD anymore uniform.
Total cost from after Easter hols to Summer Hols: over £100. + just on uniform from asda, Big W and a couple of stuff from primark, not including shoes (kick me) and here was silly me thinking WOW im getting cheap stuff!!!

Anyway these holidays Ive gone to adams bought DD 2 trousers (excellent quality I think, well hope) £9.00 each and a school cardigan for £8.00 BUY 2 GET 1 FREE.
Debenhams had 30% off so got her a pack of two shirts from there for £4.80 and 3 from asda at 95p each. and her underwear which cost me £8.00 from M&S. Promised myself that now apart from a pair of shoes (good quality ones clarks, kickers etc) and a pullover jumper. DD is not having any more school uniform till hopefully after the XMAS hols.

    Is this reasonable????????

P.S Sorry for the ever so never so long post had to get it if my chest.
Men will say of matrimony : “Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free” While women say of marriage : “Why buy the whole pig just to get a little sausage”:rotfl::rotfl::T
