Just book with malagacar.com and save yourself a whole world of pain.
Do not book with malagacarhire.com or the pain will return :)
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
  • Just posting a warning to other travellers hiring a car in Northern Ireland with travel plans that include crossing the border into the Republic of Ireland, and asking for advice for next time.

We did our research and booked well in advance, took a separate excess policy, and then discovered at the pickup desk that there was an extra charge of £9 per day to take the car across the border; this added 50% to our car hire costs.

The potential for this charge (but not the amount) was mentioned deep in the terms and conditions, where I had not spotted it.

I will attempt to get some of it back, but does anyone have any advice for next time? We very much like Northern Ireland but would not want to spend a holiday in Ireland without including the Republic.

Just booked 16 day car hire for 89 euro about £65 full-full with Centauro. Used this company lots over the last 11 years with no problems. Also use Questor for my car hire excess insurance with no problems.:)

Just come back from holiday and when I picked up my hire car from Europcar at the airport desk, was told that the car insurance I had paid for already, was not sufficient and would have problems claiming in case of any damage. The bloke on the desk insisted on me and my daughter paying for extra insurance, I repeatedly told him I had insurance already, but with 5 members of my family waiting for me and a large queue behind me felt pressured into having extra insurance.
I went away and checked out my original insurance and this confirmed I was adequately covered, went back to the desk and spoke to the manager and phoned him, he promised he would refund my insurance money and said I should not have had to pay for extra insurance.
Despite now waiting for over 3 weeks nothing has been returned, obviously a fantasy story from him. Be warned about Europcar.

Whether or not you have separate insurance to cover the excess is none of the car hire company's business, and it's a mistake to enter into a conversation with them about it. Just decline their offer to provide the extra cover decisively, without giving any reason. Just say no.

  • Booked a car through atlas choice with travel rent.
Travel rent are difficult to find working from a cabin the car park.
Atlas choice take your money before you land
Travel rent then add 50% on top inventing some local charges, this they demand in cash making it difficult to get back through your credit card company
There is a supposed customer service route, but your complaint will not be investigated, run a search this company are infamous for this kind of robbery, (wish i had before using them)
All travellers avoid atlas choice in every city
  • ECONOMYCARRENTALS. IF you are over 75 BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY!!!
8th July I booked a car for Cagliari, Sardinia and paid them a deposit, the rest to be paid to the car rental company at the airport. I'd told them my age, which was clearly shown on the e-voucher they sent me. 5th September went to the car rental desk at Cagliari airport. No car! Why not? "We never rent to people over 75" It took over an hour and 5 tries, to find a company (small local one) which had a car free and do rent to over 75s. But it cost more than twice what I'd been quoted.
On return home on 12th September, I e-mailed ECONOMYCARRENTALS, who will look into it!
My contract was with them and they have had the use of my deposit for nearly 11 weeks.
10 days later I'm still waiting. I am way out of pocket, not even had my deposit back, let alone the difference between their agreed quote and what I had to pay, let alone compensation for a rotten start to our holiday and the real upset it caused my wife. BEWARE!!
  • can anyone explain this one to me, booked car hire in Mallorca December last year for October this year (book early to save money as the axim goes), total £139 for week with pick up full return full fuel policy and total insurance cover (from third party site), did a search now for when I go and can now get same car with same company with same fuel policy and same total insurance cover for £85.50

so it looks a though its not cheaper to book early but to wait until closer to time, or am I missing something?

If you book with the big companies it's fully refundable up to a week before you go. If you insist on looking at prices after you've paid, that's the way to go.
