panda i can only say best of luck with dealing with continental ....it can be like banging your head against a wall. i fly with them sometimes through necessity but you keep your fingers crossed that you don't have any complications. (most legacy US carriers are the same to be fair).
make sure that any emails you have from them 'rectifying' the problem are taken with you on the trip .....even then they still sometimes fail to comprehend what their head office is instructing them to do!

Im even more baffled now got the follwoing email from Continental....
Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, he did not have enough miles in his OnePass account to complete the upgrade (the miles needed are 15,000 per person). Also, you cannot use Virgin Atlantic miles to complete an upgrade, only Continental or Northwest Airlines miles.
Yet in the booking in my account we are still in First Class!!Undefeated Wii Fit ski jump champion!

I know the thought of a free upgrade is nice, but it doesn't sound like the upgrade would really have been that great.
I think you did the right thing, if only for the peace of mind.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

I really do think you did the right thing and clarified this before you fly.
If your OH really had upgraded you and they'd taken airmiles (?) from you for it, it would have been too late to argue the toss when you were checking in.
5 hours is not really that long a flight (IMHO).
Enjoy your holiday.0
