    it depends upon each bank

barclays : you need to use the pinsentry to log in or if you are paying some one for the first time.

nationwide: you log in as normal but when you make a payment you need it.

so basically, yes, if you make online payments you will need it whether at home or abroad.

I don't see how the PINsentry works. It doesn't communicate with the computer or internet, so how does the website know if you've put the same code in as on the PINsentry?

Does this include using a card in an online store, as well as accessing an account online?

Barclays current account interest is rubbish anyway:D
Non-existent more like it, for standard accounts they don't pay any interest any more, so you have to pay for one of their accounts for them to pay you a measly amount of interest,

No, you use it to log into your online account and for transfering money to people or paying bills. It is not for when you make a payment over the internet or in a shop.

If you have a Barclays account and don't have the PIN sentry yet I would advise you attempt to do an online transfer so that they send out the PIN sentry. Better get it in advance of needing it than having to wait when you do.

I think they are an excellent idea. The main problem I have is logging in from work as I do not want to carry it around.

I think they're an abysmal idea. I already have an SID for one of my online (non-financial) accounts, I don't want to start having to carry around a PIN Sentry for every account I have for whenever I need to access to my bank accounts from work and/or home. I currently access (4) current accounts with 3 institutions, savings accounts with a further 2 institutions and on top of that, credit cards with yet another 2 institutions.

That's a minimum of 5 institutions with cards, maximum of 7 including the savings.

Am I really expected to deal with up to 7 authentication devices? Even assuming some of them may be interchangeable, I think it rather optimistic to assume that I can just keep one at home and one at work to access all those accounts.

I tried to do it by phone but that takes 3 days to transfer---wot a larf- my cash and I can't choose where it goes:eek:.

This is the 3 day cycle for interbank transfers. I forgot the timeline but barclays are doing it in stages for the newer 24hr transfer, buy transfer amount. So would have taken 3 days whatever way you transfered the funds.

    PinSentry - pah!

Huge bulky device which you never have with you when you need it. If you don't have it then theres nothing useful you can do online other than look at the balance which you could do from a cash machine.

I left Barclays because of this madness.
