The processor is better and it comes with a Fingerprint sensor (if you want it)
But not sure if it comes with a 3 year warranty, which is worth £120+.
And of course, a cool laptop bag ;)

I`ve noticed that Aldi do not take credit cards and I like the added protection they provide. So I will not be buying the laptop. I don`t have much confidence in a warranty from Aldi so I will be looking to see what John Lewis have. I know how good their guarantees are.

Not much use for you, but for others reading it the Scottish branches do take credit cards as well.

Allegedly it's a trial scheme for us (I work for them in Scotland, my views are mine not the company etc) but I think they've forgotten about it as it seems to be taking forever to be rolled out. I've been with them two years and we've had it all that time and I recall one of the other staff saying they'd had them for some time before that.

It's not one of the laptops but I got one of the Medion PCs nearly two years ago and I've yet to have a problem with it.

Re: Worries about the warranty - the initial contact for you is the manufacturer (as we don't stock them all the time it makes sense to get in contact with the people who can repair or replace it rather than going to a store). As I've seen Medion stuff in places like Curry's before I assume they're a legitimate brand rather than a rebadged effort like other electricals we sell. I wouldn't expect you to have any problems with them, I'm not aware of any customers coming to complain about them.

Stockwise, I would be surprised if places are running out of them tomorrow. The last two PCs and the last laptop we had most of the stores up here had beyond the first day (we've still got a few units of each at ours now).
  • Depending what you need it for, I'd recommend getting a eee 901 PC. They're £300, 1.6 GHz, 1GB RAM, fast 20 GB flash drive, webcam, mic, bluetooth, wireless, 1kg in weight, 6 hours battery life, 2 years warranty and no moving parts (reliable!). Ideal for web/email/videos/music and writing documents/spreadsheets and really portable. See here for some images to show its size: http://www.flickr.com/search/?z=t&q=eee+900&m=text

I don't understand the need for getting these massive heavy overpowered laptops. The Medion has 3GB of RAM which not even high-end computer games use. It'll also be very heavy and gobble up batteries.

that is a decent offer, but if you want you could buy a similar spec one with core 2 duo

the ee is okay, but the 1.6 atom performs not as wellas the previous 800mhz celeron in the 701. Why buy an ee if the laptop will just sit in your bedroom? For the same price you can buy a dual core 2gb ram 15inch laptop that runs vista

I would also like to add that in fact a buyer's contract is with the supplier, not the manufacturer, even if the seller has made arrangements with the manufacturer to provide after sales service.

I bought a laptop from Aldi as a present for someone who's birthday was around 35 days later. On opening the package it was found the TV facility did not work. On returning it to Aldi I was told that as their returns olicy date had been exceeded, I would have to deal with Medion. On attempting to do so they said they would send a new replacement part which would take at least ten days to arrive, but there was no gurantee this would solve the problem. By this time a solution to the problem was urgent, as the recipient had to go elsewhere and a laptop was required immediately, and Aldi could not provide a replacement. I contacted Consumer Direct (see below for links), and was advised that contrary to Aldi's assertion that I had to deal with Medion, in fact they had a responsibility, under the Sale of goods act, to supply customers with goods which are fit for purpose. I therefore was entitled to a new replacement of refund of cost. Thankfully I was able to go elsewhere to buy a replacement straight away.

Consumer Direct also advised they receive a substantial number of complaints about this type of problem, but obviously the life expectancy of a particular item needs to be taken into account.

Got mine this morning. Sent my wife off to queue at Alfreton but she got one without a problem. They were in the back so she couldn't see how many were there.

That's my evening gone then - messing about setting it all up

But what can all that extra hardware do that the eee can't that normal people need to do? That was my point; most people don't need that kind of power. A dual-core vista laptop like that is going to be heavy and have a low battery life.

1- for one thing, a big criticism from the ee 901 is the small keyboard size, a lot of people want something that is easy to use, not cramping their style...

2- a lot of people might want more storage then the 12/20gb harddrve (unless you opt for the eee 1000h)

3- the processer isn't really very much of a break through, less energy, but most importantly i find this doesn't seem to matter in portable laptops, the most important thing is to have a decent sized battery, as the msi is equipped with a 2200mah battery, the eee 901 is something like 6000mah, of course its going to have more battery life.

4- some people don't want a portable laptop, but a home laptop. the ee isn't best for movies.

    ---

The eee is good if you want a very portable laptop. its processing power and use is limited in this respect, but it does what its good at. You can't comapre it to full spec laptops
