If you do consider the Moon Palace, do be aware that it's quite a way from the main drag (aka Hotel Zone).

Local buses (very cheap) run every few minutes from (I think) the Westin Hotel all the way to Downtown Cancun, but they don't go as far as the Moon Palace.
It's easy to hop onto a bus and go to one of the many shopping malls, clubs or restaurants from most of the other hotels.
I don't think the MP would have suited us (purely from a location viewpoint) but if you really want an away-from-it-all holiday, you should take a serious look at the Moon Palace.

When we were at the Moon Palace they laid on free buses to and from town for this very reason.
IIRC they ran every 15 minutes.
Then once in town we didn't have to worry about going to a restaurant and buying food as there were a couple of Moon Palaces' sister hotels and we could use them.

    Hi Shelly
    Was that recently?

When we dropped people off after day trips, there always seemed to be lots of taxis picking people up at the MP and a friend who stayed there a few years ago said they found it expensive to actually get out of the hotel.

If there are now courtesy buses, then as I've already said, the MP could well tick all the boxes for janiebaby.

Apart from their 2k budget, unless the OP is happy to spend that for a week.

    Hi all,

Well, only last night I booked a two week all inclusive stay, in a 5* hotel, in a room with a juccuzzi, for a little over 2k.

In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, leaving in a little over 4 weeks.

I am very happy bunny...so is Mrs Sayer

    Cheers

    Leo

  • I was in Sri Lanka 2 years ago in September. It was stunning and weather was great (monsoon usually around end October). What about a few days in Colombo and then travel to the south where I know there are eco-lodges next to national parks (good for seeing elephant and other wildlife). There are great opportunities to mix with locals and discover the unique culture

Hi poe - I knew you would be along soon to recommend Mexico - its on my wish list too ;)

you sooooo have to go, we stayed in Tulum which is is about 100 miles south of cancun but within 20 min drive of playa del carmen which has bars and shops etc, it was nice for a visit. we hired a car and went out and about for a week, saved loads doing it that way rather than with tour companies it also gave us the freedom we wanted, kids loved it too

I rarely go back to a place (apart from lapland which I do have a slight obsession with at the mo) but Mexico is one place I would and will be going back to, it has something for everyone

We went to Margarita this July (it's an island off Venezuela at the bottom of the Caribbean) to the Laguna Mar through First Choice... and it was AMAZING. We spent 12 days lying on the beach/by the pool and did an overnight trip to the mainland where we stayed in the jungle (well, nearly) and walked through waterfalls and went in a teeny tiny weeny (12 seater) plane over Angel Falls...

I didn't want to come home and would go back again (except there's SO MUCH world to see and I wanna see it ALL!)

The hotel was lovely, the rooms were amazing, the food was great and the rep was one of the best I've ever met...

The venezuelan mainland is utterly beautiful too. I did a 4 day boating tour styaying in hammocks in rainforest camps ( cost about 50 quid) through canaima and it was heartstoppingly beautiful

the venezuelans were so generous and helpful. Caracas can be a bit dodgy aftyer dark, but nothing staying in the best areas and a pre-ordered cab ands not being flamboyant with wealth - just be sensible.

Food was superb, and for real barefoot luxury why not consider Los roques. Stunning.

I personally think that Zona Hotelra on Cancun is pretty awful I stayed in a 5 star AI which I perosnally couldnt fault, ( apart from "mexican evening" with the obligatory hat dance which I thought was pretty awful) but the scores of amaricans getting utterly hammered was not great. I think OP sghould miss spring break, which unfortunately was when I found myself there. Ive been to cancun twice, but never realy stayed there for more than a day or so.
I agree tulum is much nicer, and there are some beautiful beach huts ther ewith all mod cons ( jacuzzis etc) not too far from Chitchen itza and also there are the deep holes for snorkelling ( cant remmeber what they are called now!) close to tulum that were a joy, so many fish to see and great to immierse yourself in a hole they threw human sacrifices in :p

Cancun is also not for me but it does have something to offer if you like bars etc but totally agree with the above poster regarding spring break, the young American crowd are not fun, not only are they drunk and loud but they are also rude and inconciderate. Luckily they don't tend to venture very far from Cancun so even in places like playa del carmen you can escape them despite it being touristy

lynzpower - the holes are called cenotes
