What are you looking for in your holiday besides the AI aspect? Do you mind somewhere remote-ish, do you want somewhere where you can wander to the nearest town? Do you want shops, do you want somewhere where you can take a lot of daytrips? Do you like history/culture/wildlife etc? Or do you simply want to 'flop and drop' for a couple of weeks of relaxation?

well a kind of flop and drop plus a couple of trips out if that helps , nothing too taxing , we like doing a lot of walking and looking at the sceneery

So do you want to be able to do the walking from your accomodation, or do you mean some daytrips would fulfil this?

I can only recommend based on my own experiences. I have been to Cuba three times and I love it. If you do a forum search for 'Cayo Guillermo' it should bring up some previous info I have posted on here. The Cayos though are isolated but you could choose a different resort in Cuba that may be better for you, Guardalavaca area for example.

One thing to bear in mind is that time of year in a lot of the Caribbean is classed as the hurricane season but in practice you may only get a few short sharp showers, plus if you are looking for culinary excellence then you may be disappointed.

I can highly recommend Sri Lanka but I would look at combining a tour or mini-tour with a beach stay or arranging a few days tours once there. Sri Lanka has the most stunning scenery and cultural/wildlife aspect if you head up to the cultural triangle. I can't remember off the top of my head if it is affected by one of the monsoon seasons at that time of year but again, you might only be looking at a few short sharp showers but the beaches can be unsafe for swimming from.

Sorry, I've probably not been much use have I ?

Try North Carolina Coastal Beaches Hot and Humid, Blue ridge mountains in the north are spectacular (blue ridge parkway a must) and a must do is prospecting for saphires I found 2 over 5 carrats. For North use Asheville as a base. Trip to charlestown in South carolina and Savana in Georgia are very worthwhile

Sri Lanka is in the Indian Ocean off the Southern tip of India, flight time is about 12 hours. There is some useful info here:

    http://www.boutiquesrilanka.com/about_sri_lanka.php

and that states September as a good time to go.

I cannot stress enough though that the scenery is so stunningly beautiful I think it would be a crime to go there and just sit on a beach for a fortnight.

Yes it is safe to go outside your hotel. There are troubles in Sri Lanka but the main troubles are restricted to the NE of the country which the tour operators are not visiting.

There have been some attacks in Colombo and a couple of other areas but they are not targetting tourists, they are attaking the ordinary people using public transport. If you were taking a few days away you would be using a private car and driver and be perfectly safe.

The roads in Sri Lanka are not very good, for this reason it can take many hours to cover a relatively short distance. The beaches south of Colombo are better but it would take a few hours longer to reach the delights of Kandy or the Cultural Triangle than it would if you stayed north of Colombo. A popular AI hotel there is the Club Hotel Dolphin in Waikkal.

I do appreciate that for some the concerns about the troubles will override their desire to visit. If you go over to the Trip Advisor forums there is masses of useful info about Sri Lanka, including plenty of info for people concerned about the safety aspect. Personally it does not bother me and I am hoping to return there next year for another fabulous holiday.
