Is she managing to scavenge some food on her late night walks? I only thought of that because a neighbour of mine puts fox food out at night on the verge and every now and again my JRT gets it (she's a walking dustbin:o ) and I notice that I have more to clean up in the garden the next day IYSWIM!

The other thing is that she is probably getting bigger meals as she gets older....meaning more "output" depending on what she's fed.....could you feed her last meal earlier in the day so that she has time to digest it and do her stuff before bedtime.

If that's not the problem, probably the best option is to go back to basics with toilet training.....bit of a pain but it's not that unusual for pups to have a blip around that age, maybe with a trip to the vets first to rule out any physical problem?

Maybe try crating her by using a crate as her bed and a den at first with the door of the crate open always, then you can shut her in there at night. Putting a blanket over the crate will make it more den like and dark. I have several crate sizes if you live in the SE Kent I could lend you one.

Thank you for the kind offer, but we are down in the south west. We are going to try moving her late night walk forward as she seems to come back from that pretty lively. We will just take her out in the garden before bed and see if that helps at all. If not, then we will go down the crate route. Thanks again

Thanks for that. Will try and move her food forward a bit and yes, she is having bigger meals now. No food on offer on the late night walk. Thanks again and we'll keep trying. Appreciate your thoughts

Is she telling you she needs another trip out at night before going to bed?

perhaps you could move her last meal forward a bit to give her a chance to digest before her last trip out?
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Thanks, no she's not asking for a late walk, we just thought it might be a good idea, but on hindsight, it probably isn't. Took her on an earlier evening walk and then just a trip into the garden last night and she did do a bit of a poo then. Got up at 6am this morning and all was fine in the kitchen, so fingers crossed we are heading back in the right direction. Think we might try her on Arden Grange food as I believe there is less "waste" from that. Is that right? The time that we did try her on dry food, we found she constantly wanted to drink and therefore lots of puddles. Will this still be a problem? Thanks for the advice:j

Congrats to pup on a dry night! They do drink more while on dry as wet is about 80% moisture so they get it from the food if on wet, but see how you go, they probably take in the same fluids just in different ways

Arden grange is really good, Mrs Tine here (I think) feeds it & her dog does well on it, I think she said little waste yeah.

Is she ever left alone at other times during the day? How does she cope then?

I'm wondering if it's not a house training problems but more a 'seperation anxiety' problem - some dogs relieve the stress they feel from being alone by weeing and sometimes pooing......
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

Thanks. She is left alone quite often as we are all in and out fairly frequently. We did give separation anxiety a thought and I have been looking for a nice dog friendly soft toy to keep her company, but they all seem to have horrible squeakers in them!! When we are out during the day she is generally out in her kennel and in the garden, but during the evening/night she is in the house
  • If you swap her to Arden Grange, there's nothing to stop you soaking one of her meals in boiling water (then letting it cool, obviously!) as she'll get a decent amount of her daily water from you doing this. I let my pup have one or two soaked meals per day and a dry one to keep her teeth clean.

She's on (Skinner's) Field & Trial Puppy and has four poos per day at regular times. She's 14 weeks.
