this is my first post here so please be kind:D

we have a 9 month old west highland terrier who is very well behaved and an all round good dog. we are having terrible trouble with her doing the toilet in the house? we moved at the summer and since then she refuses to go outside, she can be walked for hours or let out every 20 mins and she will not do anyting but as soon as she gets inside she will go on the kitchen floor. i have tried limiting how much she drinks changing her feeding times, no attention when she does the toilet in the house, cleaning with doggy products to get rid of the smell all with no success?? she only does it on the kitchen floor

at our last home we had a german shepard next door and both dogs played and went to get each other as soon as they were let out. they both went to the toilet outside and we never had any problems. i really dont know what to do now as its getting ridiculous that i have this to come down to every morning and its never just 1 small bit there are always around 4-5 puddles?
vet checked her over and said there is nothing medically wrong? any advice/tips would be much appriciated!

How about putting a piece of newspaper soaked with her wee outside, on the same sort of surface that she used to use in your old garden (grass or paving), weigh it down with a brick or stone, then take her to it on a lead every hour, when she does finally 'go' reward her instantly with a small piece of cheese or similar. Clean up inside with bio washing powder solution, then spray the area once it's dry with white spirit or white wine vinegar to prevent her 'remarking' in the same spot.

Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

my westie was a bit accident prone when he was a pup - I used to have to cover the whole kitchen floor with newspaper yet he still preferred to pee on my rug in the living room !

He always got loads and loads of praise when he did do it on the newspaper.

I gradually reduced the amount of newspaper in the kitchen and he gradually got used to aiming specifically for the now limited amount of newspaper. The newspaper was moved closer and closer to the back door (over a few weeks) and eventually the paper was taken outside. This was usually in sync with when he ate dinner. Loads of positive praise when he did go to the toilet outside.

Has the area outside been 'used' by other dogs previously?

Please don't 'limit' the amount of water you put down - dogs should have access to water at all times.

My westie is now 8 yet I still praise him when he goes to the toilet outside.

Good luck and keep us informed of your progress x
  • you could also limit the amount of space he has at bed time , i did this i bought one of the hexagon shaped metal play pen and put my shih tzu in there at bed time with bed and toys and left food and water on the out side(only at bed time) this helped cos she wouldnt wee where she sleeps

Is it at all possible her doggy friend can pay her a visit, to reminder her where she should go?

She's had a routine with the other dog, and maybe being part of that pack will help her back to what she should be doing.
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

thanks for the replys will give neighbours a phone later and see if they would all like to visit!

we usually put her in the kitchen at night as we are worried about her peeing everywhere and its old wooden floor throughout apart from the kitchen.

no other pets have lived in this house for a very long time and she loves other animals around

am going to try the soaked paper and paper reducing thing over the next few weeks and see if t helps

thanks for the replies feel that we are doing everything right just missing something?

  • Same thing has happened with my Westie - but she is 5yrs. We moved a year ago and no longer have a garden and now she just wants to wee in the kitchen and it seems like a vicious cirlce because its progressively got worse - now she wont even attempt to wait till walkies instead goes right there even if i am in the room. :(

  • I was wondering if I could ask for some advice. We have a 4 month old border collie puppy. Since they day we got her she has slept in the kitchen in her bed at night. The first night we had her she poo'd on the floor then no more poos at night for at least 4 weeks. She has had wee accidents, but we have even managed to go a full week at one point with none of those. Unfortunately over the last 2 weeks or so she has been pooing more regularly in the night. So we've started to get up again in the middle of the night to let her out. This morning at 3.30am when we got up there were 2 poos on the floor.
Each evening we take her out for a brief late night walk and then give her time to do her business in the garden when we get back. We have been doing this for a number of weeks now. We haven't crated her. I can't think of anything that has changed in her/our routine that should have caused her to become unsettled.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I always thoroughly clean the area to get rid of the smell so she doesn't think that the kitchen floor is her toilet! Thanks
