So do I detect a resounding yes to advertise it this way? Is it worth the risk? Should I just put FOR SALE and my contact details, and nothing else? I'm thinking if I write a price on it then that could be deemed as 'trading'. FOR SALE could mean a number of things...

And LinasPilibaitisisbatman, please don't be so narrow minded - I am advertising other ways and this is potentially one of them!

  • TBh you have to question the sensibility of buying a car from someone who is that cheap they resort to a piece of A4 paper in the window.

There are few crimes and oh so many things they will nick you for.
After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
    To dissolve the people
    And elect another?

We've sold lots of cars this way and they sell faster than if advertised in the locals/net. This is a money saving website!
OP, I've never had a problem with it before, they've cottoned on to a few people who leave cars in laybys etc but not heard of anyone else having probs. From reading the Mail article is not only certain councils that have implemented it? I wouldnt worry anyway!

I have sold several cars that way. It is not a cheap way it's a practical way. People see the car and if they want to view it they can phone me. It's never failed me yet.
  • its just to stop these selfish toss pots who line roads and laybys with 10 cars

someone near me does it and theres nowhere to park as they take all the places

It's only "illegal" because some jumped-up jobsworth at the People's Republic of Barnet has abused their position and creatively interpreted the law.

What is needed is a High Court challenge to these muppets, and I'll bet you a pound to a coachload of Diversity and Equal Opportunity Advisers (salary £35000pa, applications welcomed from disabled afro-caribbean lesbians who are under-represented at this level), that any sensible Judge will rule that a private person putting a "for sale" sign in his own car, is not breaching any law.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

This selling by the side of the road thing seems to happen quite alot in South Wales. I have seen a by-law sign prohibiting sale of vehicles at the side of the road.
