    Hello everyone.
I thought I'd just let you know my experience with Vista Readyboost and a difference it's made to my system.
I have a Sony AR41E laptop running 2GB of memory. I thought I'd try this Readyboost to see how much of a difference it would make.
I did a search for a suitable device and found a 4GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro USB 2.0 flash drive stick on Play.com for £9.99 delivered. What you have to remember is not all USB sticks will work with Readyboost so if you do this yourself then make sure the item you purchase a Vista Readyboost one and also this only works with Vista.
I think you can use SD cards as well but again they must be compatible.
Anyway I got the stick this morning and plugged it in and was offered a choice of opening the files or setting up the Readyboost. I clicked the Readyboost and the next screen asked how much of the memory I wanted to use so I choose all of it. I rebooted and now opening and running programs, opening files and the internet are alot quicker so if you want a cheaper and easier way so to boost your system without the hassle of installing internal memory then I believe this is the way to go.
    Hope this helps.
    Pete.

devizes, I'm not sure you'll be able to do that. It'll depend on if your motherboard will allow you to boot from a USB drive (Most probably don't). Also, it'll be slow, the speed of reading from a USB drive is way slower than a hard drive. It should be possible to run linux off a pen drive if you can boot off it, but its probably not worth it.

As for the whole vista-hate thing going on again, the problem is with PC retailers. They claimed the PCs were 'Vista ready', meaning they could run Vista Basic, but then shipped them with Home Premium. Of course its going to run slowly.

And as for running it on a PS3? What were you trying to prove? At least it installed faster than MSG4 does* ;)

*This is a joke at the long install and loading times, and FMVs, made upon what I've heard of the game. I've not played it, nor do I own a PS3.

    Plenty of "how-tos" at:

But iviv is right about the speed (or lack of) - last year I tried building a media centre PC using a USB drive instead of a HDD (to reduce noise and heat generation). It took ages to boot or load an application, though once started up it would work fine.

Quite correct, but you can't run 3GB under anything but single channel

There you go, talking rubbish again.

Look, BOY, I've probably been in IT longer than you've been alive.

It's a browser exploit, moron. Affects everything except Win95/98/ME and can be easily circumvented by using a non IE based browser or simply disabling ActiveX. Try understanding what you read in future.

Indeed. Damn Small Linux is a nice little distro and was under 100MB at the last look I took. UI takes a little getting used to as it uses one of the lightweight window managers such as Xfce or Enlightenment rather than Gnome or KDE.

By my calculations he's been "in IT" since he was about 12, so you'd better listen boy.

Only a year out. Started when home computers first came out. Used to build RAM packs for ZX81's and repair them when people fried them thanks to the infamous RAM pack wobble. Then when "proper keyboards" came out, I used to fit them too. Moved on to repairing Speccies after that. Strangely Commodores seemed to work forever. Sadly at one point, I could code in 6502 machine code OTTOMH.
