I use Avira which is very good and uses little resources, it has an annoying splash screen that pops up when you do an update but its not too bad.
I would not recommend that anyone goes online with some kind of virus protection, yes it is easy to spot alot of the threats out there but that is not enough, plenty of legit websites are infected. The only way of finding the limits of the possible is by going beyond them into the impossible.

Being in IT for 10yrs, you must be mad not to have any Av installed.
When you say AVG was not running - can you give more info?
How much RAM do you have?
What OS?
Try Avast:

as some friends use it and say its good.
I personally use Nod32, its low resources hungry and has won alot of awards.

It's very safe as it only shows what programs you have installed and running including any nasties that you should not have running! The malware spyware removal guide sticky here by Browntoa has successfully been used by many to sort out their problems. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
theres no identifying data on a hijackthis log, purely the software thats running/installed at any time. It allows me to spot things that should not be there and identify the problem
do the malwarebytes and the combifix scans , then posts the logs here, the only information they give is about what has been found and been deleted, nothing of a personal nature is revealed
can the others argueing about the merits of antivirus software carry it on elsewhere so that Katie doe not get confusedEx forum ambassador
