Apply anyway, sometimes things happen quicker than expected. In the meantime get on to Coop. You could also phone Barclays in say one week to see if they have opened account and get the account number etc. That could save you a couple of days wait.

In the meantime, tell your landlord that you're changing your bank account and your rent may be a little late and you need to set up a new direct debit etc.

Didn't know co op had changed their rules. I had a debt with them that they wrote off as it was just charges thanks to Sky  They closed that account last September. BUT they were happy to open me a new one about 3 weeks ago. Something to do with their fairness policy.

If you have a Barclays branch go in explain the situtation and I'm sure they will rush it through. They rushed mine through last year and I had account number next day. Mind I don't have access to it now as it was put in joint names, and mine was removed on Friday ready for my BR next week.

If that fails have you a friend who will help?? maybe open an account in their name for you to use for your rent??

Should try the Co-op first if I were you. They were great with me even though I owed them nigh on 15k on a Visa card when I went BR!

I've only heard one person say that they were told this.

I don't think I would take the word of just one member of staff. It is certainly still worth applying.

I wouldn't bother with any other bank. Citibank don't take BRs whereas you know Barclays and Coop do. I would advise you to take the advice given here, if both Barclays and Coop fail then you could look around further. I just hate to see you wasting your time.

Yes, I said I only think I heard on here... I would definitely still try them as I think they are the best option and he could actually get account details in 2-3 days if lucky!

Might be a daft question but why didn't you open an account before you went bankrupt?
  • Don't know if this is still possible but at one time you could have your housing benefit paid directly to your landlord so this might be worth a try.
