A Word of Warning re First Class Recorded Delivery

After Royal Mail lost an item sold on Amazon, I have since always sent First Class Recorded Delivery.

Royal Mail recently lost an item sold on ebay. I returned the payment made on ebay, and put a claim in for the item lost and the postage paid.

Royal Mail have refused to reimburse me for the item, £15. They wrote to say that it could not be located, and could not be tracked with the tracking number which it was allocated. And that they hoped I was happy with the action taken.

Again I wrote back to ask for at the very least the postage refunded as they had failed to delivery the service guaranteed to me, and they have refused even though I have sent them original proof of postage, as well as proof of the value of the ebay item.

I recommend that you use a different company for sending items. Do not rely on Royal Mail's Recorded Delivery as Royal Mail themselves have admitted to me in writing that they cannot track items sent through Recorded Delivery even though these items have tracking numbers - if it goes missing, it's lost and Royal Mail take no responsibility for the item or for refunding the postage paid to them.

Recorded delivery should give you exactly the same protection as 1st or 2nd class post with a COP. Phone RM on Monday and ask them to reopen the claim as you are claiming for the loss of an item and maybe they overlooked that point?

Did you fill out the claim form and attach all the receipts, or did you just phone and ask what had happened to the item?

No, but it would be nice if it was tracked by a signature at the end of its journey like its supposed to be.

The sytem now is completely unreliable hence my recent claiming session for batches of recorded delivery items delievered but not signed for. I am now awash with books of 1st class stamps in compensation for each and every failed signature.

Yes, that's absolutely what Royal Mail have said. And they even refused to compensate me for the postage paid to them - surely they need to reimburse a person for postage on lost items as they have failed to deliver the service they guarantee in the transaction.

I never said it was, what I said was, it would be nice if it was tracked at the end of the delivery, which is what you are paying for.

So I know you're making the point about not being fully tracked, I'm adding the point that it is completely untracked because RM is consistently failing to fufil the contract & service that has been paid for.

thats right and as i have posted many times previously RM are trying to address this with the new PDA signature/track units
however its not as simple as couriers using large cumbersome units given DHL,parcelforce etc dont have people out carrying their deliveries on their backs

Well I haven't read your other threads but my view would be,

You don't need PDAs, just do what my postman does, if I'm in, I sign for it and I get my parcel, if I'm not in, he takes it back to the sorting office, where I either collect it within one week and sign for it or it goes back to the sender.

It's very simple, anyone sending me a recorded delivery, either gets my signature or gets their parcel back.

It isn't the tools that is stopping it happening, it is people not following procedure. If soemone doesn't bother to get a signature now, or someone doesn't bother to enter it on to the website, then having a PDA is unlikely to eradicate those problems.

    sorry but your wrong
if your sending an item then how can you say why the system doesnt show a signature?
the paper system causes many issues,if you want i can list many factors which will be addressed by the PDA's and some of the stumbleing points
just looking at your post of a postman taking an item back to the delivery office shows you know little of how things are done now
