Malwarebytes & SUPERAntiSpyware query

I know that these have been mentioned before on these forums but I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me about Malwarebytes & SUPERAntiSpyware.

I've already got AVG 7.5 and ZoneAlarm’s inbound/outbound protection their email protection and their Spy Blocker.

One of the things I’m always concerned about is whether downloading more software on to my computer would slow it down even more than it already is as it’s quite slow as it is. Will these make a difference or will my computer be OK if I do download them? Any other info on these would be most welcome too.

By the way, any news on AVG 8 as I’ve read on here that people reported their computers slowing down after downloading? I've been reluctant in downloading this as mentioned above.

Thanks!

  • Loads of questions here,

Right Avg 8 - a quick search of this forum will certainly bring you up to speed - for me I would use Avast instead at the moment and then unload AVG 7.5.

As for zonealarm - I would remove the spyblocker section of that programme.

Malwarebytes is a reactive programme so it wll only use system resources as and when you run it.

Superantispyware works in a similar way, well the free version does.

Avast also has an e-mail scanner built in.

As with all products it is down to choice.

Avast is really good so is Antivir for alternatives to AVG8, anti-spyware wise Spyware Terminator is very good and unlike most other free ones it has a realtime shield that stops things getting on your system.

Can you explain realtime shield? Do you mean every time you use your computer it searches etc for spyware?

You say use Avast instead of AVG and then unload AVG 7.5. Will this download on to my computer before unloading AVG 7.5? I'm assuming from what you are saying that it's not a good idea to unload AVG 7.5 first before downloading Avast. Or am I missing the point? confused-smiley-013.gif

The reason I ask this is because when I downloaded ZoneAlarm first time it wouldn't allow me to download their Anti-Virus software due to having it already with AVG.
  • Realtime protection = proactive, trys to stop things happening.

Also download a new anti virus product before removing the old, that way you are protected - remember to only run one anti virus product.

Download the new one, disconnect from the internet and uninstall the old one, then install the new one - connect back up to the internet and update it immediately and run a scan.

Get rid of zonealarm and use either PCTools Firewall Plus or Comodo Firewall Pro both are a lot better than the free version of zonealarm. Comodo throws up more popups.

Use the same routine as for the antivirus for installing the new firewall.

I was under the impression that I’d have to pay for either PC Tools Firewall Plus or Comodo Firewall from what you were saying, but I checked these out on Google and found that they are actually free software.

By the way, I haven't looked much more into AVG 8 but will do once I get a bit more time. I may even just go for Avast as recommended as it does sound much better from what you are saying.

Thanks for you help, if I think of anything else I need to query I’ll post it here. You’ve been a great help.
  • I didn’t actually get round to installing Avast & PC Tools Firewall Plus as I’ve not given myself time to do this. I’m a bit confused regarding Avast as I can’t see where to download it although I’m guessing the one to download is Avast 4 Home Edition. And also how do I uninstall AVG and ZoneAlarm? All I can see when I right click on them is quit AVG control centre and shut down ZoneAlarm. If I were to quit AVG and shut down ZoneAlarm does this uninstall these programmes? PC Tools Firewall Plus looks quiet straightforward though as there’s a button on the front page to start the free download but with Avast I can’t seem to see anything.

Edit: I’ve found the page where you download Avast 4 Home Edition. I think it’s this one??

I had a look at another page which says: Please feel free to take advantage of our try before you buy offer. Most of our downloads work for sixty days from the first installation even without providing a serial number. Do I need to apply for a serial number before downloading this or is that for something else altogether? And if so will I get Avast 4 Home Edition for longer than 60 days?

I guess this is the page for registering? Am I right?
  • The page for free download is this - http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Download it first and then look to uninstall AVG and Zonealarm from within control panel.

I will have a look for a few guides to assist you.

  • Can you also tell me whether I need to clean my computer first before swapping from Zone Alarm? I know that somethuing is there but don't know how to clean it off at no cost? A big problem I have is I am still on Dial up as Broadband is not yet available where I live. And some of the solutions on this site are not practicable as they simply don't/won't download via dial up, too slow? Thanks
  • Ok - if you are not sure if your computer is clean you are faced with a number of options.
    1. Download a few programmes from someones computer who has b/band or

    2. Run programmes whilst on line.

I suggest Malwarebytes as a download - 2mb and an on line scan(after the initial files are loaded you can come off line.

Do you want instructions on these two suggestions?
