Can I just throw something into the mix here?
Have you verified that this council tax debt is actually definitely yours? The fact that you say you haven't recieved the letters would ring alarm bells with me - I would ask for proof that this is your debt and what it's for and exactly when...
Just in case...

Thanks for all the advice given here so far, I really appreciate it. I did ask the council to send me a copy of the outstanding amount I owe. Although now that I know Capita owns Equita it looks as if all my communications with what I thought was the council could now have been with Capita although I am not 100% sure. The telephone number I rang was 0845 300 0328 so not sure if it's the council's or Capita. The email was definitely to Capita. Surely Capita owning Equita is a conflict of interest?0

While I am waiting to hear back from Capita what is the best method of keeping the bailiff at bay as I don't want him to keep breathing down my neck or to pay a visit which he hasn't done yet?0

I would tell them, if they phone, that the debt is in dispute and you are waiting to hear back from both Capita and the council. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -
There is also County Court Form N245, not sure how relevant or helpful it would be in your case (if you are disputing it) but check it out....Blonde: Unemployed: Bankrupt.
What do I know?

I'm also going to go to the council tomorrow in person and see if I can get this moving along any faster. As Herbie21 pointed out above the council should be the ones to tell Capita what the situation is rather than myself so I am sure I am in for more headaches. Does anyone have any advice as to how best to deal with them especially with regards to Equita being representatives of the council and as such they should reign in Equita? All advice appreciated. Thanks.0

UPDATE: I just got a call from my mum saying that she has paid the bailiff as he came round today and threatened to call the police etc and made her cry. Basically intimidated my mum into paying but the bill she paid was five hundred and something pounds!!! What the hell?!?! How can people be allowed to get away with this type of behaviour? So now I need a new plan of action since this money has been paid and I don't know where to start. Am I able to claim any of this money back? Please reply ASAP. Thanks.0

Hi,
I emailed her but I'm still waiting for a reply, I'm sure she's busy since this problem with bailiffs seems to be endemic. Anyway, while I wait for her reply does anyone have any suggestions? Will my local CAB have good advice? I'm thinking I should go see what advice they have.0
