Yep, i like paypal as its no fuss. I wouldnt be able to sell on ebay if i could only use cheques due to the time involved. (bank transfer maybe, but it hasnt taken off here like it has in germany)
I also wouldnt buy half as much on ebay if i could only use cheques, also due to the time involved, lack of protection, no credit, quick impulse buys etc0 -
As a buyer I LOVE being able to pay for items straight away, no hassle of postign off a cheque, etc.
As a seller I HATE having to have my eBay income charged by Paypal. It's the same as buying an item and being charged a surcharge for paying by CC.
I can't wait till Google gives them competition.0 -
The advantage of paypal for me is that at 6am this morning i bought some packing materials from ebay, I paid immediately by paypal and have already had a email from the seller saying my items will be despatched this morning. If that seller had not accepted paypal I would have had to find a cheque book, send a cheque through the post etc and probably wait at least 10 days for my goods, so I wouldn't have bothered and would have just gone to a different seller.
As a seller I assume my buyers think the same way, and am sitting here now packing items paid for overnight which I will take to the post office on my way to work. No fuss no hassle.

I won't buy if a seller surcharges, full stop. I bought something the other day and there was nothing on the page about a surcharge then on the paypal page there was a message saying basically pay the 4% or else! I sent the seller an email about it, paid without the surcharge and even received a positive.0

I encourage people to use Paypal even though the charges are high. Otherwise people want to pay via cheques or postal orders and that means going into town to cash them which will cost me money for parking or the bus fare.0

If sellers don't accept your payment without the surchage you can report them to ebay. If it's an item I really want and thats the only one there etc, I mail them first to advise them that they cannot charge for paypal and that if I win, I won't pay the surcharge, also send them a copy of the policy, depending on the response I get depends if I bid or not. If I'm not fussed about the item and they are trying to charge, I look elsewhere. I'm a seller too, so suffer from it my end, but at the end of the day, I value my ebay and wouldn't want to be reported for blatantly trying to go against the policy.0 -
remember if you charge a surcharge , then your sellers protection is voidedAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0

I've got a negative feedback on my account from a person who bought something for 99p plus 40p postage who moaned about having to pay by cheque. She said it was too much of a polava and didnt pay when I state clearly in all my auctions that I only accept paypal payments from outside the UK. So I did a NPB alert and then relisted the item. Then she gave me a negative for not letting her pay by paypal. She obviously didnt read my auction properly.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

If you ticked the 'I accept paypal box' then she was correct in asking to use paypal. Just like every other situation with paypal your terms and conditions cannot over ride paypals terms and conditions. If however you did not indicate that you accepted paypal anywhere other than in your auction text then your buyer was at fault.
The only way you can accept paypal for overseas sales but not for Uk sales on the same auction would be to not indicate that you accept paypal, but put in the body of your auction text that overseas buyers can use paypal if they wish.
You were lucky to get away with just a neg, your buyer could have gone for a non performing seller complaint.

Surcharging isn't allowed under eBay rules, but at the moment it is allowed to discount for using specific payments (bizarre I know), therefore it is possible to discount for cheaper methods than Paypal0
