I'd prefer to use OS X to windows any day but I'm priced out thats one of the reasons I keep going back to the shop. Sure I'm a little bitter about being priced out but then I'm entitled to be, its a combination of rubbish windows security/features and (for me) over priced units from apple that make me a linux user.

Asininity, I would have to disagree that Apple Products are overpriced.

Like for like Spec, Apple products are there or there abouts the same price as equivalent PC products.

Apple just tends to keep their product lines simple, with generally higher end components, which thus reflects in the price.

Being a user and owner of Both Windows and Mac computers, I would have to say they both have their Advantages and Disadvantages.

Not so happy imac owners see http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=imac+24+inch+screen+problems&spell=1
The screens on the new imac's 20 and 24 inch have many problems with inconsistent colour display. I bought a 20inch a few months ago.A dark grey band scrolled from top to bottom changed colour to a very light grey.
No good for photgraphic work and returned. The demo. one in the shop was the same. Anyone buying an imac should test the screen for this fault.
Previous imacs did not have this problem

yeah.. i read all about this.... i must be one of the lucky ones, who doesn't have an issue with my 24" screen... no dead pixels, no banding or colouring that I can notice...

thing is.. you can keep getting it swapped til you're happy with it!

I'm sure I posted this before, but it is about time i did another comparison.. things might have changed..

an iMac might look expensive when you compare it with a standard base unit and monitor set up. But you're comparing apples to grapes there.. (bad joke, sorry)...

we need to compare like for like.. so. here is a face off between the Dell XPS ONE, and the Apple iMac 20". Adjusting specs along the way to make it a fair comparison, then we look at price at the end...both companies allow you to edit the specs online before you order...

    Dell XPS ONE

    Intel Core 2 Duo Processor - (2.20GHz,2MB,800MHz)
    2Gb Ram
    320GB Hard Drive
    8X Slot load CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW)
    WiFi
Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
Hybrid Analog/Digital TV Tuner with Remote Control

    £999.99

    Apple iMac 20"

    Intel Core 2 Duo Processor - (2.4GGHz, 1066MHz, 6MB cache)
    2GB Ram
    320GB Hard Drive
Slot Loading CD/DVD Burner - Dual Layer -
    Wifi - Bluetooth
ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics processor with 128MB of GDDR3 memory
    Apple Remote Control
    iSight Built In

    £888.99

Add On - Elgato EYE TV - £70 (cheaper if you shop around!)

    Grand Total - £958

So on my "more expensive" iMac, i get a faster processor, a better graphics card, bluetooth, and probably better software for my tv stick, which i've only had to buy if i really wanted it!

And, in the process, i get £41 in my pocket to keep, (or £111, depending!)

*blows the expensive argument out of the water*

There are some for whom the dependability of their computer is their paramount consideration.

You would not be best pleased if to get it to do so you had to send a plea of help to the Techie section of MSE back in England, along with a couple of hundred lines of computer code, and wait for a reply.

I don't disagree, that doesn't mean Windows isn't a viable option. It's used across businesses all over the world on a daily basis and I don't hear too many people complaining about it in the pubs afterwards.

You keep referring to the techie section of this board. I'm not sure if you've realised but it's not truly representative. The techie forums are for people new to technology and people seeking free technical advice. And from looking at the front page, there a a few general windows threads but no "pleas" with "a couple of hundred lines of computer code".

The short-sighted buy computers at the cheapest prices; but how long do they endure, for how long can they cut the mustard and how often do they fail to work because of problems with their operating system?

No. I buy good value, not cheap. As do a lot of others.

What geeks fail totally to grasp is that most other people don't want to spend their time tinkering with their computer nor playing games with a plastic box. They want a computer that just works properly, so that they can use it to do things with.

You potentially have a point, although it's the dumb users who refuse to learn about their pc and the internet that either cause the problems, or are affected by them. Typically online fraud. We're taught how to drive a car, and educated at schools.

As for your personal abuse, if, to you, I do "come across as a stereo typical know-it-all (sic)" I can at least console myself with the fact that I know-it-all how to spell stereotypical.

You really shouldn't accuse people of being things you can't spell; it loses you the credibility and the authority necessary to level the charge.

I'm not to bothered that I mistakenly added a space. But I think it reflects on you, and is a little said to pick up on such points. It's poor chat, certainly not good banter.

Also with regards to the video. An interesting watch, although remember there will be a certain amount of spin, and also hidden facts. Jobs is the best when it comes to spin and promoting products and Apple.

At the risk of being potentially pointed, please accept my profound apologies for assuming that you had a sense of humour.

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Sorry I missed the joke. No need to apologise, I think it's all just got a bit too serious. I just get a little agitated at times as I find no one solution is perfect (Ideally you pick what fits the problem). I'm not hugely Mac based, I go as far as having a MacMini as a media center, bluetooth keyboard, and Airport Express. But I still use Windows, and Linux. Can't be Windows for development purposes and Linux works well for me on my main pc.

So the moral of the story is....by a !!!!ing "normal" computer then!
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

    No.

The moral of the story (or at least of the thread) is that one should buy a Mac if one can appreciate it and something else if one can't.

And that Mac users hope that a sufficiently large number of people will continue not to be able to, to ensure that malware writers will continue to concentrate on Windows and ignore the Mac. :)

  • Or, if you want to buy a Mac, buy one, but don't hark on it like you've reached a higher degree of enlightenment and are somehow superior than anyone who has chosen to buy an alternative otherwise it makes you look like a nob.
