My daughter's cat has disappeared. How long should we keep on paying for the cat insurance? If she comes back in bad shape I assume we wouldn't be covered if we stop paying.

Now that IS a tricky question to answer...

I guess that, to be honest, it comes down to whether you are an optimist or pesimist :(

From my experience, most animals return/are returned within the first month and a half (depending largely on the area that you live in; largely rural or urban, ie. people "adopting strays," traffic issues...:() and after that it becomes increasingly rare, but not impossible, for them to return.

    Is the cat chip'd?
EDIT: Just re-read your post and answered the above question myself!!

Have you contacted your local Veterinary surgeries (and animal charities) to report the loss and provided a description so that if any stray or RTA victims are brought in, they may be able to narrow it down quciker (even if chip'd, I would still recommend doing this to everyone in the same situation).

Should you continue and for how long...? Difficult to give an answer to that, although I would (putting sentimentality aside) make that decision on how much it's costing per month and personally I would probably only continue paying for a maximum of a further 3-6 months...

    Hope that helps you.

We've had 2 cats leave home and continued paying for 6 months just in case, but neither showed up again.

We've got all current 7 insured with Direct Line @ £48/month, and the only thing so far that hasn't been covered has been dental work. We've had various cuts and abcesses, a fever, a blocked bladder (thanks IAMS) involving 10 days in the veterinary hospital, and Direct Line have been brilliant.

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

    Seven?! _pale_

I don't blame you for having pet insurance, that could otherwise get expensive! :p

    P.S. abscesses, my favourite!! :T :)

  • Well moneysavingexpert advice has really backfired for me on this one. I was insured with DBI for the last 7 years, which was costing over £10 per month for my cat, so used the pet insurance search engine etc, and changed to Argos pet insurance for less than £5 per month. This all was transacted on Tuesday the 13th ( unlucky for some?). We then discovered a couple of days later that the cat had broken its leg . Went to vet etc. Bill will be about £800, so rang up Argos and apparently in the small print it says that we are not covered for the first 10 days!!!!
I still think this is not very clear in the small print but they don't agree.
Anyone any bright ideas as to how to solve this one?
If not, please all be aware of this situation with Argos. Other insurances cover you straight away, such as Petplan.

No suggestions i am afraid, but commiseration's for you. When i re insured my puppy in November, i was so scared to take her out, i kept her in for the changeover of the policy to take effect and the first 10 days of the policy. However, it was probably easier to do that with my pup than it would have been for your cat.

  • Thanks for commiserations. I suppose the moral of the story is to read the small print at least once thoroughly, maybe twice! Have a happy Christmas.
  • I have just switched our cat insurance from Petplan to M&S and saved approx £54 per year for what appears to be better cover... :)

Excellent thread. Ive read carefully and decided that Petplan and Marks & Spencer appear the best for my kitty as they have a life policy. Got quotes for both and am now the proud owner of a marks & spencer policy, for £5.45 per month, with a £7k limit and no excess. Needless to say, im very pleased.

I love MSE! In the olden days of fending for myself, id have gone with Tesco or somewhere similar, simply for the 1000 points and then got screwed if something serious happened. Thanks for posting excellent advice guys!

We've adopted two older cats, both are 9 year old females that have got all vaccinations up to date & have been speyed.

They are indoor cats, always have and always will be.

The cheapest I've been quoted for both is £16.42 but the policy was very poor, it only covered each condition up to £2500 and only upto 12 months, whichever came first!

So, I'm hoping someone on here can point me in the direction of good cat insurance, with cashback or any discounts if possible!!
