Little Bear, thanks for your comments, I think once you've had the experience of a very sick animal it certainly gives you something to think about.

Pollyanna - it's those sort of bills that would make most people think twice if they had to pay them. So I'm glad you were able to give your dog the right care.

kr15snw - That's great news about Chunky, hopefully he will go from strength to strength.

Bunking-off - that's really what I thought before my cat was ill. You're quite right that insurers must be making money overall so on that basis, it isn't worth it over all insured owners... I got quotes from M&S (about £9/10 per month for my younger cats and £15 for my oldie), so over a lifetime I reckon you could pay nearer to £3k, but then if you compare that with Pollyanna's bill...
  • Usually when you get a puppy you get 6 weeks free insurance from the Kennel Club with the option of taking it out for longer. Petplan also do 6 weeks free insurance so that makes three months free!

Go with petplan, you can get cashback via Quidco now I believe, but we've unfortunately had to use it quite a bit and they've been great, no problems and paying promptly. As someone else has mentioned they cover conditions for the lifetime of the pet as well. My partner is in the Veterinary business and we were not obliged to use Petplan for our own dog, but she simply found it was the best product out there. What's the point in saving the odd pound every month then having hassle when you're trying to claim?...or worse still not being covered.

when i first insured my dog, petplan were offerning six weeks free insurance and then the option to continue the cover, we found them really good and not that expensive either.

Ive read martins article and today ive just had my renewal from more than...its gone up from £11.99 to £14.99. I have a feeling this may be due to a pre existing concdition that ive been fighting with them over and also due to the fact he is 7 and a half.

Does anyone reccomend cheaper cover with a reputable company?

there are many other insurance companies out there that will insure a cat under 8, unfortunately i havent discovered any that will also give you a good deal that will also cover the pre exsiting mediacal condidion.

Get quotes from Pinnacle, pet plan and M and S, as they do lifelong policies, cant hurt to have a look.

    I've been Money Tipped!
My Guineas are registered with a vet, but not insured. If fed, housed and cleaned properly, they generally don't suffer from any complaints. You may find they get arthritis and things as they get old, but there's not a lot you can do. TBH guineas are incredibly good at hiding illnesses (any ill ones would soon be picked off in the wild), sadly when they do look ill, it's often too late to help them.

Having said that, you should be able to insure them through Pet plan under their Exotic Small Mammal policy, check their website.

I have just insured my ten year old with Sainsburys. They have no upper age limit & were suprisingly the cheapest quote (& it was lifetime cover!)

I also got quotes from Animal Friends who are very good too! Good luck!
nothing to see here, move along...
