  • please please please you must ensure you get a for life cover our first dog max we took out a policy with e&l on a recommendation from some one and we didnt really read it, was just excited about getting our first dog who by the way is a rottwieler, well long story short he now has hip displacia but is only covered for twelve months so our policy at the moment cost roughly £14 a month but after sep he will not be covered for his hip displacia and if we stay with them and anything else goes wrong he will only be covered for twelve months again but if we change policies he wont be covered for his hips because its a previous condition and monthly policy will go up to around £48 month because he has been ill. so unfair. but with our other dog, who is a collie cross we are with pdsa and they cover for life upto a certain amount depending on which policy you take and it costs around £13.00 a month.
now i am not recommending or unrecommending any insurance company i am just stating who we are with all i say is make sure you get a policy with life cover. thanks for reading

As I understand it M&S offer 'Lifetime' healthcare for the pets entire life or have I misunderstood ?

I am still looking into insuring the puppy (now 4 months old) and the cat (7yrs). It all seems abit of a mind field to me !

You can only really find that out by contacting them and asking if it is a full lifetime policy, just read the small print & steer clear of 12 month policies if you want fully comprehensive lifetime cover.

It is a minefield but my advice is don't base your final decision solely on the lowest quote - make sure you are getting the cover you need & do a search on google for NFU Mutual insurance because they have undercut everyone i tried so far & offer permenant health care.

    Mark.

This is exactly the point i was getting at, thank you!

I honestly believe it is a mistake to just look for cheap insurance, you need to think ahead to the worst thing that can possibly happen & ask yourself if your current policy would be able to protect your pet in those circumstances, if the answer is no then don't throw caution to the wind.

I also have Rottweiler & if you think about the kind of health issues you could have with this breed the cost could be phenomenal, as i am sure Mirrorimage already knows, it can cost anything up to & above £2000 just to operate on the hips, then there is the after care, hydro therapy, painkillers, physio etc, etc. And after 12 months you are stuffed because it is now pre existing.

Still glad you took out a 12 month policy?

    Hi all,

I'm looking to insure my 11 y/o Jack Russell, no major operations or health problems and she has been spayed.

Cheapest I've seen is £11 p/m, but I heard somewhere not to insure with anyone underwritten by E&L:confused: , anyone know why this is, or anyone have any suggestions to who I can use(any quidco/cashback/incentives, or just plain old quality of service!)

    Thanks in advance

  • I am a Vet Nurse and don't know of any insurance companies that allow you to start insurance once the animal has passed the age of eight, so may not be possible to insure her.

I would phone compnaies and ask!

If there are any that do, make sure they have a policy that covers "for life" i.e will keep paying out for medication for more than the year covered by that policy. Cheaper insurance usually means they will stop paying for things like heart, diabetic, or arthritis medication when the policy is renewed, and these are usually medications for life!

    Hope that helps...

  • Does anyone have any good/ bad experiences with pet insurers. I need to insure my dog and needed a little help to put me in the right direction. My vets have their own recommendation but i am not sure if thats the best option. I want a minimum of £1000 per illness.
  • please do not go with E&L pet insurance, you may think they are a bit cheaper than ie.pet plan but you get what you pay for . my old lurcher developed a lump on his head and had to go for an op .anyway to cut it short i informed E&L and shortly after the bill wes sent . £600 this was at the begining of dec .i still have not been paid and after lots of phone calls and getting very negative responces it seems they will not give me a date ,i asked the question again and it now seems it could be in years. I now have a claim to go in for futher treatment and they wont now even send me a claim form,i was with pethealthcare on my last dog and i could not fault them. but i am locked into a company which i can't get out of due to the age of my dog . so be aware there are som big companies out there tat just want to rip you off and all they are interested in is horses

Petplan are the ones normally recommended by vets. I am with Marks and Spencer who have a no excess option. Avoid anything underwritten by E&L, and make sure you have 'for life' cover, i.e. it doesn't stop paying out on an illness after 1 year. IMHO £1000 is not nearly enough for per illness over a lifetime but is just about adequate if the limit renews every year (as it does with M&S and Petplan). I've also seen Farmer's Union recommended on here, but I've not used them and I don't know what the details of their policies are.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.
  • Thanks for everyone. Just signed up with M & S. To think if I had not looked here I would have been with Tesco's!
