petplan have different levels of cover, have you gone for the most expensive?

I went for the life cover for £4000 worth of cover per year. I would advise getting the life cover as my last dog got arthritis and she wasn't covered after a year of treatment.

Right so the middle price they have given me is £25.89 a month for a covered for life policy £4000 per year.

We will get 4 weeks free from the current owner so will be arranging cover mid Jan 11.

    Thanks for help

I'm no expert but just going with my gut feeling, also if you telephone them you might be able to get a bit more off, I did :D
  • Please do not go with M&S they rope you in with the for life and then the premiun starts to double each year and excess also used to get you to pay 35% and above. You will also pay for the full year if your pet dies at the start of the policy year, as they did with us. It was in the small print as they say.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that each of us have vastly differing experiences, even with the same insurance company? What the hell? Is it so difficult for them to be consistant - I mean our money is consistant, isn't it?
    Debt at DMP start (1st Oct 10) £30,838k :(. Debt of DMP as of 11th May 12 £12,170k :o.
  • I just rang Petplan following reading this thread, recommendations by friends and vet, and there was no price difference to the online quote :(

I even queried why my friend with the exact same dog, living in the same area, got a cheaper quote than me, but they couldn't answer that. I had a bad gut feeling though when they took several minutes to answer the phone.

At the moment, i have shortlisted Axa, Healthy Pets and Animal Friends but am waiting to watch Watchdog tomorrow night before i make my mind up.
  • I think Healthy Pets was the one mentioned by Watchdog. AXA appears to raise the premium a lot in the second year.

Have you tried Liverpool Victoria (http://www.lv.com/insurance/pet_insurance/).

There quote for my kittens is considerably cheaper than others (about a third of the cost of PetPlan). They offer Life Cover but capped at £5000 per condition. I have asked for advice and comments from others on the board of their experiences with LV, but nothing received to date. I have used LV for other insurance with no problems on claims, so I would hope their pet cover would be no different? However, would appreciate anyone else's comments, experience, etc of LV

    Thanks

I have car and home with L&V can't comment on their claims process spoken to their customer service briefly and found them okay. I'm not sure if I'd be happy with the capped £4k on pet insurance though, vets bills are expensive and if my dog was to get a lifelong condition, like diabetes say, I think it might come to more than that amount over a few years. Petplan top up the maximum claim amount each year at renewal, they came in about £7 more per month for me and for peace of mind I've decided to pay it.

I have two British Shorthair kittens and the LV quote (sorry it's £5k per condition not £4k as I thought) is £17.33/month for both (£8.25 for the little girl and £9.08 for her brother). Whereas the monthly cost from Petplan is £33.08 for their budget cover or £46.82 for their Supercat cover.

That's a big difference over say a 12 - 15 year average life expectancy (I suppose what would be interesting is what the statistical likelihood of the kittens suffering a lifetime chronic condition is?)
