  • I read all the problems with pet insurance. would like to warn against M&S insurance - which they said was for life. Our premium went up from £16 to £35 a month this year and on top of the excess we had to pay 35% of the claim. Our dog was 14 this year so it would be difficult to go elsewhere. She got very poorly and had to be put to sleep last month and when we received the cheque they deducted 7 months premium from the pay out, so they make you carry on paying the insurance when your pet is dead. I rang to question this but they said it was in the small print and they only deducted it because we had made a claim. At a time when the family is devastated by the loss of their pet, this company no how to cash in. Please think twice before choosing.

Based on the advice in this thread (thanks all) and some extensive comparison I've gone with AXA as all things considered it seemed the best option for the price, at a very reasonable £165 for a 2 y/o basset hound.
  • I am looking for reasonable pet insurance for a 6month old mongrel with no problems. Any advice???? Thanx helen

Sorry to hear about your loss Carole.

Does anyone know if Pet insurance companies take into consideration if a dog is KC registered? I am debating whether to get a rescue dog or buy one from a breeder... (not for discussion here, but not sure I can find the right rescue dog so may have to go with breeder)

Anyway, the good breeders seem to have loads of health checks which should at least reduce the risk of the dog being ill and I just wondered if the insurance companies take that into consideration or if any 2 yr old lab would cost the same price to insure. (for example)

I should mention, the cost of insurance will not influence my decision, just all the health checks on the breeders websites got me wondering. I couldn't see anything obvious about it on a couple of the sites I got quotes from.

    Hethmar,
Could you have a look at a company called Petguard & give me some feedback on your thoughts?

Lois is the girl for that, but Ill have a look. I think we looked at this some pages back but Im too lazy to check. :)

Had a quick look at their site, which isnt very clear at all is it. There seems to be a 12 months option - where you are on your own if a condition continues after that time. Then they seem to have lifetime policies for varying yearly amounts from £1k to £7k. The thing is, they dont have the usual things like public liability , boarding costs and so on included, you have to add those on.

I did a quick sample quote for one of my dogs - a 3 year old border terrier, male neutered in a semi rural area and it came out about £50 a year more than my Halifax policy on him (which Im not over pleased with since they bunged up the excess) but with quite a lot of the benefits not included as standard.

Are there any insurers who do discount for two pets on the same policy?

I'm currently with NFU, but I'd be paying more for the second dog as they offer 10% discount to new customers, which obviously won't apply if I add a second dog to the policy.
