My 12yr old Springer Spaniel's renewal has come through - never claimed, he's only ever been to the vets for his yearly booster etc but premium up over £10/month and excess doubled!
And given his age - are we trapped?

Oh, well, I guess at 12 you are a bit stuck. Is the policy a good one with a good company? If so, you may want to stick where you are.

Have a trawl though to see if any of the good for life companies taken on older pets.

How fortunate you are to never had him unwell. xx
  • Yesterday I became the very proud owner of a beautiful 4 year old Springer Spaniel who sadly had a front leg amputated just under 2 weeks ago (and his owner wasn't insured). One of my first things to do is get him insured so I was just looking on the forum to help me decide which companies to look at.

Does anyone know if him having a leg amputated will make premiums high?

aw, so nice of you to offer this doggie a home :)

i have no idea about your question though...insurance companies usually exclude any pre-existing conditions, so if the amputation was caused by some sort of illness or disease then that illness/disease will be excluded from your policy.

One of my dogs has only 2 and half feet - he was disabled at birth. It makes no difference at all to the premium (he is with M and S) BUT those legs are excluded from cover. So if your boy had say, arthritis in the top of his leg in later years then I think you will find you have no cover for that. And obviously (please god it wont happen) but as the op was only 2 weeks ago, you will be paying for the follow ups and any complications until its fully healed.

NFU may be worth asking too as spaniels, terriers etc. are working dogs and will quite often have a leg missing :) (more so than other types of dogs) NFU may offer a decent level of cover.

Good luck with him, one leg really doesnt seem to bother them at all. I only wish my boy just had the one foot missing. One thing you may think worth doing, is getting some boots for him, just working dog boots - to keep his other feet safe on runs, just in case any glass or whatever is about - better to be cautious about any injury to the other legs.

I think as previous poster said it would depend on why the leg was amputated?
  • I've just had my renewal in from Sainsbury for £204.60! Wow.
If I take out a policy thru Quidco with Sainsbury its only £199 plus £40 cashback.
    How can this be?

I only want a policy in case my dog has a major accident or kidney failure or something like that. I don't mine paying the run-of-the-mill vet expenses.

Any advice would be appreciated as to which insurer to go with.

Sainsburys isnt a for life policy anyway.

Have you had any claims or visits to the vet during the policy?

Did you have any discounts on the policy last year? Also Sainsburys website is 20% off, so although its only a few quid cheaper than your renewal, its nearly £40 more without the dicount!
  • No, never made any claims however the past 2 years Piper has had a steroid injection & tablets for this seasonal itching (which drives him & me mad).
