tbh, I would usually send an Email, however a letter can look more professional. Its often more likely you will get a reply via email because if there were a lot of candidates they dont always want to write long letters to each of them.

Dont make it one sentence, make it about 4-5 line paragraph. State a few things about why you want it and remind them why you would be the perfect candidate but not in loads of detail.

"Thanks for giving me the opportunity to meet with you on xth July. I was extremely impressed with the company and believe it would be a perfect place for my professional development etc.... If possible could you please provide some feedback on the interview, I would find this invaluable as I am always looking to improve myself..."

    just as an example.

its an example and its a very good, ill tailor it myself, thanks a7man, i would have sent an email as its fast and you could possibly get a reply the same day whereas a letter would take a few days to a week for a reply

Mr Joe Bloggs. You could end by saying something like: 'Please advise me when a decision has been made.'

    er...have you sent it?

if not I'd suggest you re-phrase it so it's a little less about what's in it for you and maybe focus more on why they should hire you.

That's exactly why I advised the OP against chasing the employer up, he is more likely to have damaged his application than helped it.

Why don't you just phone them up? I had an interview for my current job at 5pm on a tuesday evening, and the agency phoned me back at 10.30am the next day offering me the job!

A week is more than sufficient for them to make up their mind if they don't want you, and it's very rude for a company to not let you know, so maybe no news is good news, or at least a maybe?

If you don't want to phone them, then I suggest a polite email (perfectly acceptably in today's day and age!) would be a good idea:

    Dear Mr X,

Just a quick email to follow up from my interview last week on <date>, and to get some feedback from my interview performance, and to enquire whether my application for <insert job title> was successful or not.

I look forward to hearing from you soon,

    Kind Regards,

    C_Ronaldo.

I think contacting the company and getting feedback from an interview is always a good thing to do, as they're more likely to remember you, and consider you for any other positions that come up.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
