What makes a hobby a hobby, as opposed to a passtime or a sport?
I always thought the basic difference was that hobbies are activities that cost money and passtimes are free, but I may be wrong. Amateur sports are competitive, extreme sports are high-powered adrenalin rushes, but both can be classed as hobbies, as they cost money and earn you no overall profit. Hobbies, in my opinion, should contribute to your enjoyment and social life outside of home and work.I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

The best definition of a hobby that I've read is something you do for pleasure that other people do for a living. That makes you an amateur, or a hobbyist.
Therefore you could paint as a hobby, for enjoyment, while for someone else, it could be their profession.
In that respect, watching TV wouldn't be a hobby, and neither would reading books. There are people who get paid to watch tv or read books and review them, for example, but as far as I know nobody gets paid just to watch TV.
I'm still not 100% happy about that definition, because dog walking could be considered a hobby. There are people who have dog-walking businesses, but a hobbyist or amateur dog walker wouldn't do the job any less well than someone who did it for a living, surely? How well can you walk a dog?
I guess there are people who go to scrabble competitions, but on what kind of scale is the scrabble circuit? Are there people who make a living solely from it?
Again, before I'd have considered a model train enthusiast (is that a better word to use than hobbyist?) to be a hobbyist, but does anyone make a living out of having a model train set? Or are the professionals in that sense the real train drivers?
I've confused myself, because before I'd have claimed that I read books as a hobby, but under this definition, reading isn't a hobby. Writing would be. Reading would be a pastime I guess. Something you do for enjoyment that nobody else does as their job.
It does seem a little wrong to me that playing computer games (there are a fair number of people who earn a living from it) is a hobby but reading a book isn't, but I've yet to find a more satisfactory explanation.
As an aside, the number of times I wrote jobby instead of hobby while typing this is shocking! I can type fine, I think something in the back of my head wants me to say jobby a lot. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
i enjoy walking, and watching a little bit tv like everyone else
however my real hobbies are cross stitch, and knitting, which is something i have just recently taken uip, and knit for charity and loving itenjoy life, we only get one chance at it:)0 -
I would be a nervous wreck without my hobbies - I can't sit down unless I'm doing something. In the evenings whilst watching tv I do embroidery, knitting, crochet or cross stitch. I also doing family history, and make cards. I also love decorating, although I'm not sure you would class that as a hobby.
I often wish I could afford a cleaner, to give me more time for what I really want to do!:D0 -
Making beaded jewellery (off-loom beadweaving to be more precise!). It's certainly costs me money (and time) but as well as enjoying the actual process I've been able to give some great gifts & now have quite a jewellery collection to wear. I also meet up with fellow beaders twice a month (we hire a hall) & we bead, chat & check out what everyone else is up to, so it's quite social.
I've also made some silver chains (box chain, byzantine & "shaggy loops" mostly), but the price of silver is a bit high for me at the moment to do much more.0 -
I guess Marathon/Half Marathon/10km running and travelling would be the ones I'd openly confess to with fridge magnet collecting (they're the new postcard) from all the places I visit, being the one I'd not mention too loudly on my hobby list.0
