I didn't say it was unacceptable, I just suggested I didn't agree with the concept of having kids and kicking them out the first opportunity you get via boarding. Doesn't quite show the love a parent should have towards their kids tbh.

This site is all about opinion and I have expressed mine.

As someone who spent many years boarding, often in a different country to where my parents were I can assure you I didn't feel unloved. Interestingly if my (as yet theoretial) child is the sort of person who woud thrive boarding its my first choice for them too. I fully appreciate there are lots of children for whom this would not be the best option. Where I would differ is that I first boarded at almost eight years old and I don't think I'll be ready to let go of a child for five or six days a week by that age, even should the child be!

I was the opposite hated boarding,my heart used to sink as I was driven down the drive. But its horses for courses isnt it? You have to pick the school to suit the child.

Actually, I hated some of my boarding schools too, but I never equated hating the school with my parents not loving me. I also, even then, appreciated that it gave me, very personally me, a better chance at knuckling down to work. At one point NOT boarding I was younger than my class mates by a number of years and this, now lost, mental agility had in turn made it very hard for me to deal with boredom.

Thinking about it there are times I would have a child who I wouldn't ideally have boarding in a boarding school. One would be if DH was working abroad somewhere where we felt the education system was not useful to our child's later education, another would be times of upheaval (such as delayed relocation, such as this) but those are personal to me, I wouldn't expect all people to make the same choices.

  • You have posted on an open forum, you allowed me to be judge!

I never said you did kick him out at the first opportunity, I said "The "part time parent" option has thankfully been rejected." because I am glad you didn't!

Of course you say you have now, which I don't agree with.

Thats my opinion which at the end of the day you have asked for... so wind your neck in

I don't see it like that, OP asked for opinions regarding the best time to put her home on the market, and her explaining the schooling dilemma is there to provide the context for her decision. I feel i am invited to give her my opinion on the house selling front, but not on her choice of schooling for her children.

I have got to say that having spoken to a number of EA's over the last couple of weeks who have been really helpful with local knowledge etc that Oxford prices are not all doom and gloom depending on which way you are looking at it. Seems that 5-7% reduction on house in the £700-£800k is acceptable. There are no drops of 30% etc despite what some forum users would like to have happen.

No credit crunch there but it has a great reputation so it shows that something good will always survive.

If you install Propery Bee, you will see a different story to the one the estate agents are telling you.

This one was on for £1,490,000 and the owners had to drop their asking price to £1,275,000 to get an offer. Just over a 20% drop.

This one started at £725,00. The owners have dropped £598,000 in July and still haven't got a buyer. I think that works out to about an 18% drop so far.
