I he is eating normally and going to the toilet as usual, then from my experience, he is fine inside. Just keep an eye on it and keep bathing it. My mum and dad took in a stray 2yrs ago and he's always fighting and coming home with all kinds of scratches, and they just clean it and take him if it hasn't gone within a week.0

He averages about 3 fights a week and is known in my road as the "streetfighter" so I am used to these kind of injuries and generally stopping it getting infected by bathing in salt water generally clears these things up.
He is still eating happily (apart from the months supply of kitekat grrr!), and doesnt seem bothered by it at all, and he is more annoyed with me that I keep inspecting it!
Nothing else I can do than wait til Saturday - I really dont think it justifies the emergency out of hours vet.
Glad to hear the salt water will do no harm so will continue with this.
I have had cats all my life, I rescue them and I currently have 9 living with me, if I took them to the vets for every scratch etc I would be paying out hundreds in vets fees a month, just keep an eye on him, cats will not eat and his ears will be hot if he has an infection, keep it as clean as you can and I am sure he will be fine

Daisymac, I used to take them for every scratch etc, everytime they looked ill etc, and in the first 3 months of having him had spent £370! The vets didnt really do much, give me hibiscrub to clean him, sometimes give him anti-bs and give me a big bill, hence my reluctance to run to the vets every five minutes! He is a tough old thing and when I got him he had huge chunks out of his ears!0

£370! lol! They're like children tbh...when children fall off their bike or trip up and cut their knee, you don't take them to the hospital, otherwise you'd be there all the time!
Keep an eye on him and get the vet to make sure it's not infected on Saturday
I'm sure salt will be preventing that though. 0 -
just got in the door and it does still look quite red 2nite, defo will take him sat and keep up the bathing three times a day, as much as he hates it!! Im sure animals have a 6th sense and know when you can least afford it!!0

Why not take him tomorrow? Saturday is a long way off, he could be in pain if it's that red.0 -
cant you at least ring the vet up for advice and ask about the salt water. I'm not sure about the salt and water on an open would (may be it isnt an open wound but i certaily wouldnt like it used on an open wound on me.
perhaps a dilution of TCP would be beter.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
i would do, but i work 13 hour days and i have no chance of getting a day off, there is talk of making redundancies, and there is no way i can risk it. he doesnt seem to be in any pain whatsoever and is sitting on my lap purring away as i speak now and rolling over to let me rub his tummy. he has eaten and his ears dont feel hot so i am not overly worried about him. if i thought he was in pain for one second i would rush him straight there. my only option before sat would be the emergency vet, which is miles away and more money than i have to just have him seen to. I honestly dont think it is an emergency0

i will check with the vet about the salt water, it isnt an open wound, just a bit red and swollen (reminds me a little of when you have a sty)
i know when i have a sty i always use warm salt water bath three times a day (although i know cats are a little different than humans!!)0 -

loopyloulou, do you have any hibiscrub left from before - because that would be better than the salt water. My vet lets me have a big bottle of this cos we have the cat from hell next door and he goes through phases of trying to take over my garden and my cats get bitten (usually on the tail or but as they try to run away:rotfl: ) The risk of scratches getting infected is actually less than the risk of infection from bites - but imo - if it was going to be infected then it would be by now, and would be swollen and pus filled and hot to the touch.
If his ears are not hot then he does not appear to be ill - and I think it would be fine to carry on keeping it very clean - with the hibiscrub if you have it. IMO - same rule with pets as kids - ONLY use antibiotics if you absolutely have to. Savlon may also help - I have used this on my own (and I have 14 and have done cat rescue for years).
I suspect that it looks worse than it really is if it is around the eye - and that it is possibly still a bit sore cos he probably keeps washing it.
If it gets hot, or swollen - vets obviously, otherwise treat like you would a scratch on you or your kids."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0
