My cat got in a fight on Sunday and his eye has almost closed up, I am already skint this month  they must know!!
In the meanwhile I have been batheing his eye with warm water (with a little salt) as Sat is the first day I can get him to the vets. Will this help do you think? I hope Im not doing more harm than good!

Also, I have two cats, and they have always loved kitekat tinned food, my little girl is tiny and always has been a skinny little thing! So, when I did my monthly food shop I brought a months worth of tins - thinking I would save money! Literally after opening the first tin, they have both turned their noses up at it, I have persevered for a week now and neither seem to like any of the flavours and eat very little, if any at all - do you think they are just being fussy and will get over it when they get hungry enough? They have both been eating more biscuits. Im not sure whether to give up with the kitekat or to keep trying and hope that will give up their protest!!

Any advice?

You're not doing the injured cat any harm by bathing the eye but keep an eye on it.........one of our cats got into a fight last year and the wound turned infectious and it was definitely a trip to the vet ! Often cats will attempt to heal themselves as well ,,,,,,,,good luck

The other cats........to be honest we have that problem with ours from time to time but cant afford to buy more food when we've already paid out for some. Maybe the warm weather affects their appetite or they could be sneakily eating elsewhere. I wouldn't worry too much...........they'll eat when they're hungry.

Would your vet not see your cat any earlier and allow you to pay when you can afford it? We have struck up a very good relationship with our vet, (to be fair though we have 3 cats and 2 dogs all insured so they know they will receive payment eventually) but I do know that if any of our pets needed treatment and it wasnt covered by the insurance, our vets would be more than willing to help us out.
As for the cat food, well thats just cats isnt it??? Ours have often done this to us, isnt it strange how they all go off the same food at the same time? We've learned the hard way, and now if this happens we take it back for a refund. However, if you've bought a multi pack and cant return individual tins, the only other option is to donate to your local cat rescue, better than wasting the food.We also sometimes just put the tins they dont like to the back of the cupboard and try again after a few months, just incase they have decided they suddenly like this food again
    Hope your cats ok.

If you are on a low income try the PDSA web site some vets assuming you can get help as they have strict criteria do both who can join, they may help pay some or all of the costs on any other treatment not this one, as it takes some weeks to get registered and you have to pay a £5 postal order, and it must be for other treatment not preventive treatment.

Isnt that always the way, my cats always wait until I have no money  I would continue to bathe the eye with warm salt water and make sure that he is eating and quite happy, feel the temperature of his ears to make sure he isnt overly hot as this could indicate an infection, I am sure he will be fine, but if you are worried explain to the vet, I am sure they will let you pay a bit later.

Re the food, that is just Cat's I am afraid, mine eat the same thing for months and then one day they wont touch it !, try missing it with another food so you dont waste it completely. Good Luck ;)
  • As others say, keep on bathing his eye with warm water and a little salt. It should keep the swelling down. Is it a cut across the eye or near it? One of my boys got a bit wound on his tail and it cleared up quickly with Savlon!

Just keep an eye on him, if it goes worse suddenly take him straight away before it gets too serious.

Even if your on a low income, please don't go to these charities unless the need is dire because too many people go to them just for free/cheap treatment, it's not fair on those who really do need their help.

Cats normally heel themselves, my mums cat comes in sometimes with injuries but the cat just heels itself really. If it looks too bad though then it's best to get him checked out just in case. Some good vets will let you pay in instalments, especially with the way the economy is at the moment.

I am not an animal lover but i am horrified to see that your cat has been injured and all you are doing is bathing it !!! and leaving it till Saturday.
Would you do this with your child. No Vet would refuse treating an animal on the grounds of payment. Why cant you take him/her today or tomorrow
If it is infected it will be a lot worse to treat having left it so long. think how guilty you will feel then.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I think you should get it seen ASAP.

Our cat had a bad fight while DH & I were on holiday.

Our DD took him to the vets, they sorted him out & I paid when I got back, vets are usually good like that.

Regarding the injury i would take him to pdsa if you are on benefits they will treat him on the spot if its an emergency, as others have said cats normally heal themselves but if it does turn nasty the vets will not be very happy in which case you would feel more guilty.

Regarding food i have 3 and i have to keep changing there food every couple of weeks at the moment i have been feeding them iams biscuits whiskas biscuits with whiskas and felix tin food iams is only £4 a bag from most supermarkets and lasts me 2 weeks.

Unfortunatley I work 13 hour days and cant get any time off at all til Saturday, and cant get to the vets and have no-one who could take him for me.

He averages about 3 fights a week and is known in my road as the "streetfighter" so I am used to these kind of injuries and generally stopping it getting infected by bathing in salt water generally clears these things up.

He is still eating happily (apart from the months supply of kitekat grrr!), and doesnt seem bothered by it at all, and he is more annoyed with me that I keep inspecting it!

Nothing else I can do than wait til Saturday - I really dont think it justifies the emergency out of hours vet.

Glad to hear the salt water will do no harm so will continue with this.
