Not only do you have the cost of importing but there are then taxes and VAT to pay at the border.
One American food company (who have a shop and website), using jam as an example, pays for the product, pays for shipping, then pays 24% duty on a jar once it hits the UK. Average duty is 10%-25% charged on american food products by the Government.
Before labelling the reasons as "excuses" I think some people need to do their homework to understand what it is they are discussing.0 -
I found a box of rock star lip gloss in poundland today, containing two pots, one shaped like a rose with rose scented gloss, and a gold skull with passion-fruit gloss.
Only one box, thought I'd mention it here, there might be others in SW London area.
I've only been going in poundland again recently, so I'm not sure what the good things to get are. I like the pretty branded glitter nail varnishes, and the Sally Hanson lip gloss pens - but wish there where some darker colours, I've only seen a dwindling number of pale, clear colours.0 -
Poundland seem to have started selling Lithium AA batteries. Packed singly they may look expensive but the Energiser ones are usually £7 for 4 (£3.99 for two at Argos) so are actually a good price if they are any good. However the Energiser ones claim on the pack that they last up to 8 times as long as Alkaline whereas the Poundland ones only claim 3 times.
Would be worth trying a set in a digital camera to see how they perform. I had a Samsung digital camera which used AA's and lithium used to give me 600 to 800 pics where alkalines only gave me around 60 to 70. Lithium batteries in slow drain items like clocks or remotes should last 10 years or so and, in my opinion, smoke alarms should always have lithium batteries in them.
I hope they add AAA soon as I use quite a few of that size in my bike lights.
One thing I don't like about the Poundland ones is that that the packaging is the same size as a pack of 4 so buying 4 batteries means that there is 300% too much packaging! I'm sure they could have improved that somehow.
Ian.
Thanks for that. I've just bought a new set of bike lights that uses AAA, they are very high-drain items, aren't they?
I can remember getting some pound shop batteries for my first set of trike lights (12 years ago) that didn't even last me out of the car park!
I bought my rechargeables on Am@zon with vouchers used doing surveys, and Am@zon also sent me some of their own brand AA rechargeables to trial. £1 for 1 lithium battery seems reasonable, if they can do 2 AAA for £1, would it be too much to hope for?Erma Bombeck, American writer: "If I had my life to live over again... A set of stamps (the kind you press onto an ink pad) the whole alphabet in gothic, illuminated manuscript style. Each letter is 1.5cm. Really nice set for crafters I think.0

Preston store had several 1metre BELKIN scart leads in yesterday. Bit old fashioned now I suppose but still an excellent price if you need one.0

In poundWORLD yesterday (sorry couldn't find a thread for poundword)
Maybelline 'babylips' http://www.boots.com/en/Maybelline-Baby-Lips-Lip-Balm_1365477/
The packaging is slightly different, Japanese writing on the carboard backing (with a engish sticker translation), also the caps are coloured not clear. Done a bit of research and it appears these are the version for the the Aussie/Asian market. No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!0
