I brought the clear version but they had many colours. I nearly brought the same thing in B&Q and Sainsbury's for £12!

This always fascinates me when I see people mis-using the word "brought" and I was relieved to see that it's not just me, and others have also observed this (notably Fifi Mad Mum).
I know a lot of people get hung up about bad spelling, grammar and puctuation but this falls into none of those categories as it's just a case of using the wrong word. It got me wondering, do people actually think "brought" in their head or do they say it when they speak out aloud, or do they think/say "bought" but when they come to type it they type "brought"?
The thing is, I see this more and more often, and it's clearly not a simple typo (especially as it involves adding in an extra letter rather than missing one out). Also, it isn't always a one-off and people tend to make the same mistake over again (as evidenced by caeler's post above - sorry to pick on you caeler !! ;) ).
I'm no psychologist, but to me it seems to be more to do with the way certain people's brains function which triggers this response, almost like some kind of mental block or a trick of the mind - does anybody else have any views on this?

PS - apologies for the slight off-topic. :D

Not slightly, I'm afraid - totally. This is no place for a discussion on grammar.

I only posted here because I'd just read the reference in Fifi Mad Mum's signature 3 posts above and then caeler fell into the classic trap twice in one post (again, apologies for singling you out, caeler).
I genuinely am interested to learn what causes this phenomenon.

If a BG feels the need to move my post, then fair enough.

Just take a look at the title of the thread:

Poundland Bargain Thread - post your finds here!

If you're interested in grammar, why not follow your interest somewhere more relevant, and leave this thread for its original purpose, rather than fill it with irrelevance?
  • I know this is the Poundland thread but here is what I posted recently about cold/flu products:
I was recently looking for a cold relief, I was in Home Bargains and I was comparing products:

Beechams Flu Plus Caplets: Paracetamol 500 mg, Caffeine 25 mg and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride 5 mg £1.49 for 16 caplets

Beechams Active Cold Relief: Paracetamol 500 mg, Caffeine 25 mg and Phenylephrine Hydrochloride 5 mg 99p for 14 tablets

I am no pharmacist so I may be wrong, but both products seem the same to me, except obviously for the price, worth checking the next time your stocking the medicine cabinet.

    HTH FiFi :)

Hi, im a third year pharmacy student and they are exactly the same ;)
theres loads of products like this - exactly the same made by the same people one will be cheaper usually as at the moment everyones worried about flu not colds! it will be the other way around when no ones worried about flu and theres loads of colds doing the rounds.
its worth always checking the label
tescos blackcurrent equivelent to strepsils are 99p a box and just as good
    :) x
