hi
my baby is 11 weeks old. she was doing great sleeping thorugh night etc and now she has started to wake for feeds again twice during the night. she is taking around 35oz of milk a day which to me seems like a lot.last time she was weighted she was 10pounds 12 oz that was 3 weeks ago. i kinow weaning isnt recommended until 4 months at least but was wondering if i shoudl start her on a bit of baby rice at night (my mums suggestion) i am a first time mum and not sure!

Hi
It's really best to consult your HV or GP about this, I know we're not allowed to give out medical advice on MSE and also if you ask the professionals they will be able to give you the most up to date advice recommended by the research etc.
I am sure your mum means well but different things were recommended when she was feeding her baby/ies and I have a feeling baby rice is not recommended this early - having said that I am really not an expert on formula or weaning so just repeating something I have heard.
HTHI don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -
11 weeks is a bit early for weaning. They now say you should wait until 6 months, although I weaned my daughter at 5 months last year as she seemed ready.
I would talk to your health visitor first and see what they recommend. They will know your baby's health history and can give better advice than us on here! Here I go again on my own....0 -
Babies do have a bit of a growth spurt at about that age...it will pass! Giving her weaning foods at 11 weeks could create more problems than it solves. I'd honestly leave it and ride this spell out xxx0

I agree...our DD started on baby rice at 16 weeks, according to the info way back 10 years ago. These days it is 26 weeks, many studies have been done to back up this info, so it's worthwhile to try to ride it out.
Perhaps change her routine around a bit to give her a bit less milk before she goes to sleep, then another 'sleeping feed' before you go to bed yourself?Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I agree with the others, that is very early to start weaning although it is so frustrating when they are so hungry and you just want to help them feel full.
I think you should contact the Health Visitor and ask about follow on milk as that may be just right for you both. Try not to worry too much though about the amount that she is taking as if you were breast feeding you wouldn't know the exact amount.
Best of luck with it all and I'm sure you're doing a great job!

we gave our little boy a spoon of baby rice in his bottle at about this age. the wife thinks it was 8 weeks when we did.
you can change the milk, but we stayed on the blue tin and added the baby rice, the advice was from my mum, though the health visitor was against it.
i know times have changed, but we listened to our parents.
he is now 8 months...and over 20lbs0 -
I think the advice is wholeheartedly against putting rice or rusk into the bottle due to choking risks etc. If you were to do it then from a spoon would be the way to go. However I really would just try and wait until as close to 6 months as possible as their little tummies aren't mature enough for "solids" at 11 weeks0

Please read this thread and this article on Netmums. There is a very good reason why the recommended age for weaning is 6 months.
Your baby's stomach is not developed enough for anything but breastmilk or formula at the moment.0
