Actually, as an OLD Style fan, I'd love to hear your bean recipes; do something useful whilst waiting for the Halifax results to come out (yawn).

If they're as late as last month, we should be able to get through a hill of beans first....

    Makes enough for four
500 grams of cooked cannellini beans - frozen and thawed - any beans will do Could use canned beans.
2 cups of chopped tart green apples I used some unripe windfalls. A cup is about the size of a teacup.
    1 medium chopped onion
1 tablespoon brown/white sugar or molasses
    1 teaspoon made mustard
    2 rashers of bacon chopped
    1 cup water

I put it all in my slow cooker for 3 hours. It could be done in a slow oven but then watch the liquid, maybe start off with another half cup.

It was really good. The apple disappeared and wasn't identifiable in taste.

    Excellent.

Could I start the ball rolling and ask for the Housing Board and Old Style board to be combined? I know there are lots of others who would welcome this - save them flicking back and forth - lynzpower, pastures new (excuse capitalization errors) etc.

Might bring a new mellowness to the Housing board?

    So what d'ya think?

I think it is a good idea. They have 'when things get tougher', 'simplifying life', and 'survival' threads, all of which will fit in well here.

I do wonder how people who rely on takeaways, ready meals and lunch bought out are going to manage when the money dries up. But then, they will not be going out as much and will have time to learn basic cooking and money management.

The knock on effects will be helpful for the NHS as there should be a big drop in drink related problems.

I wonder what other knock on benefits there will be from not so much money swilling around.

DS12 picked up a Collins Gem SAS Survival Guide the other day for 20p in a charity shop as a pressie for me (!?), so I'm already well ahead!

When you say ds12 - do you mean he is 12 years old or that he is your 12th son!?

EEK! I have 5 kids, that's enough, thanks!!! He is 12 years old! I'd need more than a bloody SAS survival guide if I had 12 of 'em!

Tell you what oldmac - I'm dead impressed that he goes to charity shops to look for stuff - well trained!

If you're setting up house a trawl through the charity shops can set you up in crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and dishes for a fraction and in ours there are Eastern Europeans doing just that!

They are all good - bought them all up in true Tightwad Gazette style - they are all frugal zealots and proud of it! DS12 has many discussions with his friends over their 'named' sportsgear compared to his greener 'recycled' clothes ( he thinks they are too scared to think for themselves and they worry too much about what others think!) - hope he continues like this as he goes through his teenage years (they start this Friday):D

I love 'The Tightwad Gazette'. It is full of such wonderful ideas. have you read 'The Millionnaire Next Door'. It shows hows many millionaires in the US live frugal lives.
