Wetting the bed at 11

Hi,
I'm new around here, so please be gentle!
My 11 year old son has started to wet the bed, and I really don't know what to do...
It started the middle of last week, when he woke me up at about 3am crying and saying that he'd had an accident. I was a little suprised by this, as he doesn't normally have accidents, however I accepted it as "just one of those things" and afer giving him a cuddle helped him to change and change his bed. Nothing more was said about his accident as I didn't want to embarrass him any more.
Friday night he was having a sleepover with a friend fairly locally, and before he left I discreetly reminded him to make sure he went to the loo before going to bed...Yesterday morning he arrived home and broke down crying, saying he'd had another accident and that his 2 friends at the sleepover had found out and laughed at him. He was absolutely mortified!!
Before he went to bed tonight, I made sure he had "been", and I also made sure he didn't drink too much after about 6pm. Only half an hour or so ago I heard him running to the bathroom and slamming the door. I went upstairs to see if he was okay and found he had shut himself in the bathroom and that his bed was soaked!
As he stopped wetting the bed regularly when he was about 4, and hasn't had an accident for at least a year, I really don't know what to do, how to react/help him etc.
Any help would be appreciated,
Cheers.

I don't have children myself so can't help with what to say to him, but I did read somewhere about children wetting the bed when they have a water infection, so might be worth taking him for a check up at the GP.Sometimes you have to go throughthe rain to get to therainbow0

Is there something worrying him (apart from the bed-wetting now poor lad)
maybe he might have and infection, perhaps a trip to the doctors to see if there is anything that can help himLife is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?0 -
aw I can understand why your worried . Two things spring to mind , 1. is a urine infection , you should take him to his doctor just to check .
2nd is Is he starting secondary school in Sept ? ,, this may be anxiety Vik
Can you talk to him, and reassure him its ok . because hes going to be even more anxious worrying about it hunie
Hope this helps0 -
Could it be possible he's dreaming he's on the toilet?
I used to do this if I needed a pee in the night, I would dream I had got up and as far as I was concerned I was on the loo (but I wasnt!)
Even now I will wake up convinced I am in the bathroom and just wake up in time.
It might not be the cause for your son, but I wouldn't rule it out. xx£200 saved for baby things :T0 -
Poor kid. It must be so embarrassing for him. Could you go to the GP or HV on his behalf in the first instance? You would probably get sample bottle to check for infection and preliminary advice;at least then if he had to go for follow up the initial explanations would be done.
Hopefully, it will pass as quickly as it started!0 -
I to would suggest that he might be worried about something?
Is everything OK at home? Without wanting to suggst theres blame around, many children especialy older children can start wetting if there are arguments within the household? Or is anyone ill, a loss of a grandparent? Is everything OK at school, he isnt being bullied is he?
Certainly, I would recommend a appointment with the GP to check if he has an infection ,poor lad, he must be mortified at this age
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I have to agree with the above, check for any physical causes, and gently ask if he can think of anything that's bothering him - and put a rubber sheet on the mattress next time you change his bed, but it might be best to tell him it's just to save him an uncomfortable night's sleep, not that the mattress will get smelly if he keeps weeing on it - that would not be helpful for him.
Good Luck, let usknow how he is, it's a terrible thing to go through.
I remember wetting the bed at aboutt hat age too, but only once, I had dreamt I was going to the bathroom and was mortified when I found out I wasn't there, but still in bed, so I can imagine how he feels doing it more than once.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Mine starts secondary in September and my first thought was anxiety about that, too.0

Hormones also play a big part in this. I have friends whose 13 year old started to wet the bed for no apparent reason. Nothing they could do it was just the hormones kicking in.
I would suggest that going up to secondary school is an enormous leap (I currently have an 11 year old in the same boat) and they worry, being honest they would do better to change schools in May after the SATS and then they wouldnt have the 6 weeks to worry about it.)
Urinary infection or even a virus can cause them to wet the bed, at 7 DS1 had a really bad virus and spent a week wetting the bed.
If you are worried speak to your doctor, they can loan you a monitor that goes off when he starts to wet the bed, it may be that he is just sleeping so deeply that he is not waking up in time. It doesnt do any harm to get him checked out as well just in case.
He will grow out of it and get over it pretty quickly, all you can do is give him a cuddle and be there if he needs to talk to you - oh and get lots of washing powder in.Free/impartial debt advice: Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) | National Debtline | Find your local CAB0 -
My 9 year old wets the bed now and then. I don't know why.
You have my sympathies, I know how upset my boy gets.
I hope you find out the cause but it may be just one of those things.0
