  • Always keep my veggies in the fridge. They tend to shrivel up far too quickly otherwise

  • I've got myself a black shopping bag from Asda and use that now, it's perfect for storing spuds. It's one of those 'real' bags they sell to use instead of carriers.

It's really big, thick black so it's dark once it's closed up but it's a bag so there is a little bit of ventilation to stop the damp mouldies, and it shuts with a big top flap and velcro, so it's stays how you leave it.

It only cost £1 or so. It's so nice to have potatoes that last more than a week or so, and to be able to buy a big bag. None of them have sprouted or gone green or mouldy.

  • If you keep them in a cool dark place then they should last a few weeks as they are.

I must say that I do like Cyprus Potatoes though, I don't know of another variety that's better for baking or making chips and the red earth on them always reminds me of the island.

A hesian or paper sack in your shed and they'll keep for ages. just make sure there are no rotten ones as it will spread.

I once experimented with freezing peeled raw spuds, they just went black and manky after a few days... There must be a way to do it though seeing as though you can buy frozen chips!

    Hi craigy,

Glad you've managed to sort it. I'll add your thread to our existing one on storing potatoes. If you still want to freeze them, this thread may help, but as a general rule they need to be at least part cooked first:

How long do your potatoes last?

And how do you keep them?

Mine never seem to last a week. I go to use them and they are fit for the in! I usually just keep them in the cupboard

I've got an old PE bag made from black cotton that I use and if I have more than a few days worth, they go into the garage to extend the shelflife.

You could always mash or part roast them & stick them into the freezer - would that help?
