    Hi jascrawf,

I keep mine in the garage which is cool and dark. A fridge will to a similar job. :) I have kept baby spuds in the fridge before with no problems. This thread has more advice:

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

  • Yup, I moved mine into the fridge a few weeks ago after posting looking for ideas (problems with them going green & sometimes sprouting).

They've been fantastic in there & have kept for several weeks - which is great as I can now buy bigger bags (= cheaper) without having to throw 1/2 of them out!

The only downside is losing the room in the veg drawer to store the rest of the veg! (but I can live with that)

I had the same problem with them going green and sprouting within 3/4 days of buying them. Never had this problem where I lived before, they'd last ages and still be firm and look fine.

Thanks for all your help, I'm going to pop them in the fridge now. :)

I have always kept mine in the fridge. I have a sack of spuds under the stairs that aren't opened yet, but they will get transferred to the bottom drawer of the fridge as soon as they are, all be it a few at a time. If I have room I have put the whole sack in there once its about half empty, but I have a big american fridge/freezer.

I always keep mine in the fridge, along with all my other vegetables. They last for ages.

I always keep mine in the fridge too, my whole bottom drawer is full of differing sizes, they last for weeks and weeks in there.

  • Baby potatoes I keep in fridge, any time of year. No fridge room for large spuds. `Washed` potatoes I rarely buy, but if I do I use them quickly for jackets after buying. -`Dirty` potatoes which I always have around I keep in a large BLACK and rather dirty canvas shopping bag, but as I have a very small kitchen that gets hot and steamy when I cook I move the spud bag...... Places Of Safety vary according to time of year. My spuds travel between caravan (when like now it`s cool but not frosty) spare bedroom (when it`s freezing outside) hall (when it`s just a case of shifting them from a hot steamy kitchen.) MOST important is Cool, Dry, and DARK. Buying dirty spuds gives you a head start there.
  • I've always kept mine in the fridge - I just put a some newspaper or paper towl down in the drawer then tip my tatties in.

I try not to keep much food out cos I have troubles with little flies and moths in this house.

I keep mine in an old pillowcase in the fridge. They last longer for me that way in the fridge.

  • I keep mine in the fridge because we have quite a large fridge (especially for a London flat!) but barely any cupboard space. I line the veg drawer with cheap kitchen towel, store all my root veg in there loose and they do fine.
