    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on how to stop/slow the sprouting of potatoes. The last two bags I've brought seemed to have sprouted really quickly, and whilst i'm happy to just cut the sprout-y bits off, I'd like to slow it if I can.
    Cheers

keep them somewhere dark and cool and dry.. they need light and warm and moisture to sprout.. i keep mine in the fridge in warmer weather which helps.

You could peel them and make mash, shape into patties and freeze on a tray then bag or par boil and roast and freeze.

The sprout bits can go in some compost in a large pot and you will have potatoes at some point. Never put in the ground though as apparently this can cause blight. (I don't have any evidence of this but a friend warned me, hubs says she is talking shoite but hey)

I keep mine in a huge black flowerpot on the tiled kitchen floor with a black tea tray on top to keep out the light. The main thing that keeps them fresh is getting them out of the plastic bag ASAP and dry them if they have sweated. You can keep them well in a cotton pillowcase under the stairs (if you have stairs!)

I think at this time of the year, potatoes are doing what potatoes want to do.... make baby potatoes:D

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

I'm sure you're right - I read somewhere that at this time of year they will just sprout no matter what you do, but at other times of the year they seem to last for ages with no trouble.
  • I know this should be an easy one but tried everything I can think of ... no joy.

I have huge problems keeping potatoes - they go green, no matter what I do (have a "proper" potato blacked out bag, have tried sacks etc).

    Where am I going wrong?:(

I've just bought 2 huge bags this morning (on offer 2 for £2) and should last me ages - if I can just stop them going green!

    Ideas please!:)

  • Perhaps not a help but - chit some and plant them in time for Christmas!

    :)

... i cannot help with the greening issue as I have the same problem. :(

I have a similar problem keeping potatoes. I have been buying big bags (5kg +) as it works out so much cheaper, but even if I put the bag in the cupboard under the stairs in a black sack they grow sprouts at a rate of knots (why don't the ones I chit do this?).

My mum always kept a 56lb sack of spuds under the stairs when I was a kid, I don't remember this happening then.

Could it be the house is too warm - no heating on at all, so not sure how I could keep them cooler.

I've taken to surrendering my fridge veg drawer and tipping the potatoes loose into that. They last twice as long that way. Takes up a lot of space though if you don't have a big fridge
