Help! How do I store potatoes?

I find that washed potatoes that are sold in plastic bags don't keep as long as unwashed that are sold in paper sacks, I've always removed potatoes from the plastic bags but the problem is they've already been in them for goodness knows how long. I'm convinced the muck on unwashed potatoes makes them keep longer too.Dum Spiro Spero0

Hi boredjellybean,
Potatoes need to be kept somewhere cook and dark and taken out of any plastic that you may have bought them in as that can cause them to sweat and rot quicker than a natural fabric.
As your thread has dropped down the board I've added it to our existing one on storing potatoes where you'll find lots of tips and hints.

Make shepherds pie, fish pie and freeze, or yu can just freeze it mashed, wrap it well though.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
If you boil and mash first, i try and add a bit of milk/butter for a treat. We then put them into small portion side amounts and freeze. My daughter does them in an old icecube tray. Its very much like the frozen stuff you can buy in the super market.
Its a great way to avoid any excesive waste.BSC member 137

Thank you, guess i am making mash this afternoon then. D o you need to let it defrost before cooking or cook from frozen?0
-
You can do either. If I remember to defrost great! If not, I do it in the microwave and keep breaking it up and then mix through a knob of butter for the last minute. Frozen hm made is just the same imo as freshly made and has several advantages. It saves me peeling spuds when I get in from work and Ds is rushing out. It saves fuel by doing a big batch at once and freexing in portion sizes. It also means not wasting those potatoes that are on their last legs.0

Silly question this but once defrosted how do you cook the mash if it's already been cooked priar to freezing? Do you just mix it around a saucepan until warmed?0

Sorry as I know this will have been asked before but I can't find it
Spent a couple of hours trawling the farmers field at the end of my street (he had finished harvest & was happy for us to help ourselves:T) and it was a bit of a rush as he'd started to plough so it was a one off chance so grabbed as many as I could and .... well, errr seem to have got quite a few more than I thought errrr approx 45kg
Now, they aren't all for me - picked a lot for M&D (who are too old to do it now) and also a bag for their elderly neighbour:) but I will have a load for me too :T
I thought the best way to store them was with the soil on in something like a cardboard box somewhere cool (was going to leave them in the garage) but Mum says she'd heard they keep better if you wash them
