Hi code-a-holic,
We have an older thread on getting a cleaner that should help to answer some of your questions. I'll see if I can find it and merge your thread with it.

I am a cleaner too and definitely agree about the having the place tidy, so your cleaner can actually clean. In all my jobs I only have one mum who does this - so guess who has clean windows and paintwork etc.
The others I have to hoover round massive piles of clutter, shelves overflowing - and there just is not time to take it all off just to wipe clean. They definitely get the worst deal, but I always explain that if I have to pick up stuff the less cleaning I can do.
Incidentally, one job I used to have. Walked in one morning and they had left the entire contents of a ball pond all over the wooden dining floor. I was fuming!
Picked them all up with the hoover - it took ages. Just so I could clean the floor. Ridiculous!Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
